Police have reported that a man has died after being attacked by a tiger at a zoo in Yorkshire, UK.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park, known as Land of the Tigers, opened in April 2009 with its tiger enclosure opening in 2011. On its website, the UK-based zoo is described as an area where the big cats can roam woodlands and grasslands or play in a waterfall pool.
South Yorkshire Police were called to the zoo on October 10 following reports of a man entering the tiger enclosure. The police force said that the man was “attacked” by the big cat.
The park are working to ascertain how it happened
According to the BBC, police said the attack resulted in “serious injuries” that led the man to die at the scene. They also said the tiger was uninjured, remained in the enclosure following the incident, and there had been no wider risk to the public.
In a statement posted to their website, the wildlife park said its emergency response procedures were activated immediately, the authorities were on the scene, and that they would work closely with them to “ascertain exactly what happened.”
Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed that an air ambulance, two land ambulances and a doctor were all deployed to the zoo.

Karmelle Pelham, a visitor, was in the lemur enclosure when staff members asked them to start leaving. She said she heard gunshots, and saw both a helicopter overhead and a “big black tarpaulin over the tiger enclosure.”
“Nobody was really panicked,” she said. “It was all very, very well organised. They did a great job of getting us out without panicking anyone.”
The park is now closed and will remain closed for the weekend. The man’s family are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.
