Skate devs respond to viral mods and promise more freedom for players

Skate developer Full Circle has responded to the game’s growing mod scene, promising official creation tools while criticizing mods that unlock paid cosmetics and unreleased content.

Players have been finding new ways to expand Skate beyond San Vansterdam, with community projects introducing custom maps and other features.

In one example, creator OhRisk shared a post showcasing Bully’s map in Skate, explaining that the ReSkate launcher allows players to apply updates released by custom map creators. Although they acknowledged the map was still buggy, they welcomed the possibilities for new locations, cosmetics, boards and decks.

The wider series has also become part of a wave of crossover projects. Alan, known as TheCanadianGTR, shared an extended look at a Skate 3 crossover with GTA San Andreas, while chasm declared that “The Skate 3 tax is inevitable” while showing off the game in Spider-Man.

The Skate series even made its way into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Now, the team behind the new Skate has addressed where it stands on community modifications.

Full Circle draws the line at unlocking paid content

In an October 9 statement, Full Circle said it had been following the release of numerous mods and supported the creativity behind them.

“To be completely clear, we are not against creativity from players or stopping that from happening,” the developer wrote.

“Where we have to draw the line is when mods or other tools bypass our systems to unlock paid cosmetics, release gated/unreleased content, or profit from these unauthorized assets.”

Full Circle argued that those practices rip off the artists, skate brands, creators and developers who contribute to the game.

However, the studio also acknowledged demand for more customization and said it was developing official tools.

“We hear you loud and clear on wanting more freedom and custom features. We are building official, secure access tools that enable broader, deeper community creation, with more to come when we’re ready to share.”

Full Circle has not announced a release date or detailed what its creation tools will support. Its statement also stops short of promising offline play or confirming that the features highlighted by mod users will receive official equivalents.
