Gears of War series creator Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski shared some positive and candid thoughts about Gears of War: E-Day during a video interview. Though he was not involved in the development of Gears of War: E-Day, Bleszinski’s contributions laid the foundation for the entire Gears of War franchise.
Bleszinski started his career as a game developer during his teenage years in the early 1990s. Shortly after joining Epic Games, Bleszinski went to work on games such as Jazz Jackrabbit and Unreal Tournament, with the latter being considered one of the most influential titles ever. Bleszinski later became the co-creator of Gears of War, where he was also the chief designer of the series’ first three entries. Microsoft later acquired the rights to the Gears of War series in 2014, two years after Bleszinski left Epic Games.
CliffyB Shares Some Positive Thoughts on Gears of War: E-Day
With Gears of War: E-Day already setting records, Bleszinski weighed in on the direction of the franchise he created. On the October 9 episode of Pause for Thought with Naomi Kyle, Bleszinski said that Gears of War: E-Day was “a class example of, when in doubt, give the people what they want.” He recalled seeing a trailer for E-Day that showed Marcus Fenix throwing a TV a Locust Horde unit as a way to demonstrate just how powerful the Locust were. Bleszinski said that the music that played during the trailer was a callback to moments from the Gears series, which gave him “goosebumps.” Bleszinski then said that he was disappointed to see that camera shaking during character movement was not present. However, Bleszinski stated that, if camera shaking was the only qualm he had about the game, then he believed that the franchise was heading in the right direction.

Though Bleszinski said he would not be playing E-Day himself, he said that he would watch his wife, Lauren, play through the game instead. The Gears of War creator stated that Microsoft sent him a new Xbox controller based on E-Day‘s designs. Bleszinski also revealed that, after he and other former Gears of War devs left Epic Games, former Xbox CEO Phil Spencer personally called him to mention that Microsoft had purchased the rights to the series. Bleszinski stated that he thinks Spencer’s successor at Xbox, Asha Sharma, is seemingly doing a good job at “turning the ship around.”

Following the game’s successful launch on PC and Xbox, Mike Crump of The Coalition stated that Gears of War: E-Day would be the foundation for future entries over the coming years. Crump added that players will not have to wait as long to see more Gears games, indicating that plans for the next entry may already be underway. Though Crump also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding The Coalition after Xbox conducted a wave of layoffs in September, he said he remained focused on things the development team can control.
As for E-Day‘s immediate future, The Coalition stated that the game’s first season of online play is already underway. With Gears of War: E-Day having more seasonal content in the coming weeks, time will tell what The Coalition’s long-term plans for the series will be.
