A new Pokemon release is once again set in the Kanto region, but the twist is that it takes place 50 years after the events of Gold and Silver. The Kanto region is the setting of the original Pokemon games, and considering the incredible nostalgia tied to it, it’s no surprise that it’s the most-revisited region in the entire franchise.
Pokemon Red and Blue take place in the Kanto region, as does Pokemon Yellow. The Kanto region was revisited in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, GBA-era remakes that were later released for the Nintendo Switch. Another pair of Kanto region remakes, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, are also set in the Kanto region. Even Pokemon Gold and Silver, which primarily take place in the Johto region, give players the chance to return to the Kanto region in their endgame. Now Pokemon fans have yet another chance to revisit the Kanto region, but this time 50 years after the events of Gold and Silver.
Pokemon Ghost Grey is Available Now
A future Kanto region is the setting of the new Pokemon fan game Pokemon Ghost Grey. As explained by Pokemon Ghost Grey creator Joey Zeed, Ghost Grey takes place in a “decayed” Kanto region 50 years after the events of the Generation 2 games, Gold, Silver, and Crystal. This version of Kanto is full of ghosts and “bad actors” and gives off generally eerie vibes compared to the cheery atmosphere that fans may typically associate with the beloved region.
An interesting feature of Pokemon Ghost Grey is that it features over 200 Ghost-types for players to collect and add to their roster of Pokemon. There were only three Ghost-type Pokemon in the original games, and so it’s interesting to see so many Ghost-types in the Kanto region. There aren’t that many official Ghost-types that exist in official Pokemon, so Ghost Grey boasts a bunch of original Pokemon, mainly in the form of Ghost-type regional variants of existing creatures.

Fan-made Pokemon games like this can help tide people over while they wait for more official Pokemon releases. As it stands, the next Pokemon games are the Generation 10 Pokemon Winds and Waves, in active development for the Nintendo Switch 2. Pokemon Winds and Waves do not have official release dates yet, but the games are expected to drop in late 2027, probably in November of that year. Pokemon Winds and Waves will introduce a brand-new region and have plenty of new Pokemon to catch. Chances are that there will be new Ghost-types to catch as well.
Unfortunately, reputable Pokemon leakers have already said that there will be no more Winds and Waves news until next year. While this is disappointing for those anxiously awaiting the next main series Pokemon games, at least they don’t have to wonder about when the next update is coming. Pokemon fans can safely circle their calendars for February 27, 2027 as the day the next official news on Pokemon Winds and Waves will drop.
