Introduced first in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 8 on April 22, 2018, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Double #21-22, Domain Expansion was revealed to be an incredibly advanced barrier technique that sees the user imbue their innate Cursed Technique into their innate domain, significantly improving all the stats of the user, including their Cursed Technique usage, and giving them a guaranteed hit as well.
Over the run of Jujutsu Kaisen, we have seen quite a lot of powerful Domain Expansions, but none as strong as Ryomen Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine and Gojo Satoru’s Unlimited Void. These two Domain Expansions went head-to-head on five different occasions in the Shinjuku Showdown, which also told us which of the two Domain Expansions was stronger. Gege Akutami, the creator of the series, showed Gojo Satoru, the strongest modern sorcerer, beating Sukuna in their final Domain Clash. That, coupled with the higher attacking power, paints Unlimited Void as the strongest offensive domain of the JJK world, but Malevolent Shrine has its own advantages.
Ryomen Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine Is The Pinnacle Of Domain Expansion With An Open-Barrier Domain
When it comes to Domain Expansions, Unlimited Void and Malevolent Shrine are neck and neck, but for very different reasons. In a standard domain clash, it is likely that Malevolent Shrine would win over Unlimited Void, and the primary reason for that is the fact that Malevolent Shrine is an open-barrier domain. While it still has a barrier, it is open, meaning it is carved into thin air itself and doesn’t have an exterior shell. This means that in any domain that it faces, it has the advantage of attacking the external shell, breaking it, and landing lethal blows on the enemy. This gives Sukuna a significant advantage in battle, and that was clear for us to see in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 224, which was officially released on May 29, 2023, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue #26.

In this chapter, the battle between Gojo and Sukuna continued and eventually led to a domain clash. What was quite clear for us to see was that Malevolent Shrine was clearly the superior of the two domains. In total, Gojo and Sukuna had five domain clashes, and they showed us that Malevolent Shrine and Unlimited Void were equally matched. In the first clash, Sukuna’s open barrier domain attacked Gojo’s external shell, ensuring Gojo lost the first domain battle.

After Gojo refilled his burnt-out Cursed Technique, they went for a second domain clash, and Gojo decided to change the conditions of his domain both inside and outside. To counter that, Sukuna himself used a powerful Binding Vow to turn off the sure-hit of his domain. Instead, Sukuna relied on strengthening the attacks on the exterior shell of Unlimited Void, once again breaking Gojo’s domain and landing another decisive blow on the strongest modern sorcerer.
The third domain clash saw Gojo’s Unlimited Void finally catch up to Malevolent Shrine by shrinking the exterior shell of his domain. Gojo was able to strengthen his domain significantly, even though Sukuna succeeded in breaking the shell the third time as well. Gojo was able to land a telling blow from the inside, shattering Sukuna’s domain as well, making it a tie.

The fourth domain clash was the same as the third one, and this time it ended in a tie as well. This showcased that even with an Open Barrier Domain, Gojo’s Unlimited Void was able to stay neck and neck with Malevolent Shrine and match it. In the end, the main difference between the two ended up being attack potency, in which Unlimited Void was quite clearly the winner.
Gojo Satoru’s Unlimited Void Is Far Stronger Than Malevolent Shrine
The 5th and final Domain Clash between Gojo and Sukuna was won by none other than the strongest modern sorcerer, Gojo Satoru. This domain clash lasted for 2:40 minutes, and this time, Gojo had a significant advantage because he was able to refill his burnt-out Cursed Technique faster than the King of Curses. This allowed him to launch his domain slightly quicker and, as such, break Sukuna’s domain and land a perfect Unlimited Void hit on him.

At the very beginning of their domain clash in JJK Chapter 226, Gojo Satoru clearly stated that when it came down to the techniques themselves, his Unlimited Void was far stronger than Malevolent Shrine. This is quite clear for us to see, as Gojo tanked Malevolent Shrine on various occasions with full-throttle Reverse Cursed Technique. Meanwhile, Sukuna would not be able to do the same with Unlimited Void. A single hit from Unlimited Void lasting longer than five seconds would essentially kill Sukuna on the spot, which goes to show that, in terms of raw firepower, Unlimited Void is far stronger of the two domains. Sukuna’s biggest advantage is the fact that he can rely on an Open Barrier Domain and crush any other domain that exists, but after Gojo developed the technique to shrink his domain and strengthen the exterior shell, the open barrier advantage of Sukuna’s domain was essentially nullified.
Why Gojo’s Unlimited Void Surpasses Malevolent Shrine
At the end of the day, Malevolent Shrine and Unlimited Void are two of the strongest techniques to exist in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, and that will never change. These domains are incredibly powerful and, for the most part, neck and neck. This is precisely why two of the five domain clashes that Gojo and Sukuna had in Shinjuku Showdown ended in a tie. Malevolent Shrine had the advantage of a wider range and the ability to break the exterior shell, and Gojo, after figuring out how to counter Malevolent Shrine’s open barrier, was able to win the last clash.
When it comes to pure attack power, Unlimited Void is by far the strongest domain that exists in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. In terms of range, Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine is superior, and in a standard domain battle, it also takes the edge. All things considered, Sukuna’s domain is superior only in some ways and would win more domain clashes, but the sure-hit effect of Gojo’s domain is significantly superior. Under a person like Gojo, Unlimited Void, at the end of the day, is the stronger technique, and that was clear to see in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc. That said, there is more to a battle than just domains, and that is precisely why Sukuna ended up winning the battle against Gojo, even after Malevolent Shrine was shattered completely.
