Learn about both endings in Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s Cost of Hope DLC to choose between Freedom and Duty.

The Freedom vs Duty dilemma takes center stage in the Cost of Hope expansion for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, forcing you to choose between embracing the Zone’s mysterious potential or attempting to crush it through military force. Zulu, first seen in STALKER: Call of Pripyat, represents Duty, a militaristic faction that wants to protect the outside world from the Zone. On the other hand, Mavka, Lukash’s protégé, represents Freedom’s desire to harness the Zone’s powers for good.
When Do You Choose Between the Endings?
There are only two possible endings in Stalker 2 Cost of Hope, and you choose between them during the Destruction of Power and Mind quest while tracking down Nord. You will have to side with either Zulu (Duty) or Mavka (Freedom) before launching the final assault.
- Tip: Create a save before making the choice to alter your decision or experience both endings.
Once you choose a side, there are still 4-8 hours of gameplay remaining before reaching the ending.

Stalker 2 Cost of Hope: Endings Explained
The choice between the two endings comes down to the player’s philosophical inclination or preference for one character over another. If you believe that mutants and anomalies should be eradicated and the Zone contained, side with Duty.
Choose Freedom if harnessing the power of the Zone and sharing its miracles with the wider world sounds more appealing. However, both endings come with their own twists and consequences, some greater than others.
Gameplay-wise, there isn’t a major difference between either ending, but you will get better rewards with Freedom, including a new Arch Artifact and a healing safe room in the CNPP.
Duty

Aligning with Zulu, you kill all the infant mutants in their tanks and Mavka dies while trying to stop it. As Duty’s general, Zulu continues to contain the Zone and its anomalies, insulating them from the outside world.
Rewards
- Leichtfuchs
- Guardian
- Freedom’s Bounty
- Water Drop
Freedom

Siding with Mavka leads to preserving the Zone’s power, protecting its anomalies, and creating an Oasis. You protect the mutant infants and face off against Zulu and Duty. However, Mavka betrays you, stabbing you in the gut and likely transferring your consciousness into a mutant.
Rewards
- Mriya
- SVU-MK S-3
- Stranger’s Rifle
Stalker 2 Cost of Hope: Best Ending
Choosing Duty and Zulu leads to the “good ending” in Stalker 2 Cost of Hope. This will likely be the canonical route for the franchise as it largely maintains the status quo of containing the Zone and purging mutants. Aligning with Mavka and helping Freedom results in the “bad ending” according to us, as it leads to betrayal and leaves behind a bitter taste with its twisted sense of freedom.
“Burn the heretic. Kill the mutant. Purge the unclean.”
