Robin Williams’ Instagram account has been reactivated 12 years after his passing to protect his likeness from AI misuse.
Legendary actor Robin Williams died on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63. From comedy to drama, he took on a wide range of roles and became known for films such as Good Will Hunting, Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, and Jumanji, to name a few.
On August 18, 2026, Williams’ three children, Zak, Zelda, and Cody, took to their father’s Instagram account and reactivated it after 12 years. The decision was made as part of an effort to prevent the account and Williams’ identity from being misused through artificial intelligence.
Part of the first post read:
“As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos, and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care. This is our way of sharing his unique talent and humor with the world, including the moments that made us and so many of you laugh, as we remember our Dad’s extraordinary life and work. He continues to inspire us and delight people all over the world.”
As news of the reactivation spread, reactions poured in online:

Zelda Williams Elaborated on Their Decision to Reactivate Their Father’s Instagram Account
While the three siblings shared a public post through the account, Robin Williams’ eldest daughter, Zelda Williams, later explained the reason behind the decision on her personal account.
Zelda, on her Instagram Story, said the account was reactivated to help fans find authentic clips and content featuring the late actor and comedian:
“Believe me, I know it’s a little strange. Making that space into one where people can find authentic clips and photos of him is one of the best ways we’ve now found to fight back against rampant AI abuse of his voice and likeness on here.”
The move comes as AI-generated videos and other forms of synthetic content continue to spread across social media.
