MMA fighter Sean Strickland shares how The Boondocks gave him insight into the shared struggles of poor Black and white cultures.

Sean Strickland has once again sparked discussion online after commenting on race, claiming that watching an animated series “helped him understand poor Black culture” and its parallels to his own background.
On the night of August 17, Strickland took to X and shared a post about The Boondocks. In the post, he explained that watching the series helped him understand Black culture. He also argued that poor Black culture has similarities with poor white culture:
“If you haven’t watched Boondocks please do… It really helped me understand poor Black culture and how similar it is to poor white culture… Change rap to country, weed to beer an opioids, and we’re living the same way.”
The Boondocks first aired on Adult Swim on November 6, 2005. Created by Aaron McGruder, the series was based on his syndicated comic strip of the same name, which debuted in newspapers in 1999.
The animated show followed brothers Huey and Riley Freeman, along with their grandfather, as they navigated life after moving from Chicago’s South Side to the fictional, mostly white suburb of Woodcrest. It ran for four seasons and 55 episodes, concluding on June 23, 2014.
Strickland’s comments come as he continues his career at the highest level of MMA. He turned professional in 2008 and eventually became UFC middleweight champion.
In September 2023, he defeated Israel Adesanya to win the title, before losing it to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 297 in January 2024. He later defeated Khamzat Chimaev by split decision at UFC 328 in May 2026, regaining the middleweight championship.

Sean Strickland Hates the Taste of Whiskey
While Strickland recently talked about how The Boondocks helped him understand Black culture, the UFC fighter also showed that he could not get behind the taste of one part of American culture.
In a video that Strickland posted on August 13, the fighter tried his hand at preparing a whiskey drink. He appeared to mimic whiskey expert Richard Paterson, following his approach while making the drink before finally giving it a taste:
“Guys, I don’t drink. I don’t know what whiskey tastes like. But watching the Englishman, it seems really nice. I got all the right things. I got the right temperature water. I would like to drink whiskey. I would like to be a whiskey drinker. I got the right temperature water. I let it breathe. I cleaned the glass. Smelled it, got up into it.”
However, Strickland did not seem impressed by what he had made. After taking a sip, his reaction made it clear that whiskey was not something he enjoyed:
“That’s f****** terrible. Oh, that’s f****** terrible. I don’t think whiskey is for me.”
His reaction quickly became the main focus of the video, showing that even a carefully prepared whiskey cocktail could not change his opinion.
