A 24-year-old Thai soccer player, Sofwan Awae, died on August 4, 2026, after he was struck by lightning while playing during a match. The player was playing for FC Yala against Abu x Nong Sirin in the Golok FA Cup at Santiphap Stadium in the Su-ngai Kolok district of Thailand when the incident occurred.
Awae, along with other players, collapsed when the lightning struck the field. The players were all injured and were rushed to the Sungai Kolok Hospital, according to a report from Thai PBS World. Awae’s injuries were critical, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Awae had only recently signed for FC Yala, which is a club that plays in Tier 3 of Thailand, on July 29, 2026. Following his passing, the club issued a statement expressing grief and offering condolences to the late soccer player’s family and friends.

The incident occurred during FC Yala’s Golok FA Cup tie against Abu x Nong Siri on August 4. The players were playing on the pitch when lightning struck along the wings of the field. Awae, who was a winger himself, found himself in close proximity to the bolt.
In the video of the incident, the player can be seen standing on the side when a sudden flash of yellow rains down from the sky and strikes close to him. A loud bang follows moments after, and the cameraman quickly realizes what happened, turning the camera off.
