Dragon Ball: Whis’ 7 Strongest Opponents, Ranked

Universe 7 is home to the strongest characters in Dragon Ball Super, and no one in the universe compares to Whis. Whis is Universe 7’s Angel Attendant and most powerful warrior. He is so far ahead of the rest of the main cast, that the idea of anyone fighting Whis – let alone winning – is downright unbelievable. You can count the number of characters in the Dragon Ball multiverse who are actually stronger than Whis on one hand.

Even though barely anyone in Dragon Ball has what it takes to take on Whis, Universe 7’s Angel Attendant has been in his fair share of battles. Needless to say, Whis has a spotless win/loss record – at least as far as Dragon Ball Super has shown fans in the anime and manga. Whis is not only the most powerful fighter in Universe 7, but the strongest Angel and the only person worthy to train Goku as he perfects Ultra Instinct.

Vegeta Couldn’t Land a Real Hit On Whis Back in the Day

Vegeta is Beerus’ personal disciple nowadays, no longer training with Whis, who has been working exclusively with Goku on how to master Ultra Instinct. Back in the early days of Dragon Ball Super, however, Vegeta was one of Whis’ two students alongside Goku. In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, Whis shows off the series’ first instance of Ultra Instinct, as he blocks, dodges, and counters every attack Goku and Vegeta throw his way.

Even after unlocking God Ki and surpassing every fighter in Dragon Ball Z, Goku and Vegeta are completely outclassed by Whis in their fight. The whole point of Whis stunting on Goku and Vegeta in Resurrection F is to show they still have a long way to go. They may be Gods now, but they’re nothing compared to an Angel’s power. That said, Vegeta’s grown a lot stronger since then. Whis may have new things to say about Ultra Ego.

Whis Danced Around Legendary Super Saiyan Broly Like He Was Nothing

Dragon Ball Super: Broly finally showed Whis in action for the first time – sort of. After Broly turns into a Legendary Super Saiyan, he goes on a rampage and starts attacking everything he sees. After Goku and Vegeta flee the battlefield, Broly turns his sights on Golden Frieza, who he pummels for the better part of an hour. Once Frieza has been exhausted, Broly tries attacking Whis, only to miss every single blow.

Whis masterfully dodges every attack True Legendary Super Saiyan Broly throws at him. Broly isn’t just strong, he’s extremely fast, so the fact Whis barely has to try to avoid his blows is a hugely impressive feat. Of course, Whis being an Angel Attendant, he can’t actually fight back against Broly, or else he risks erasure. That said, he knows Gogeta is on the way, so he’s really just trying to keep Broly distracted for a few more moments.

Whis Effortlessly Caught Moro’s Strongest Punch

Dragon Ball Super: Broly started a trend of Whis fighting in every arc, which was unfortunately broken by Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. At the end of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga (which Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will be adapting), Moro absorbs Merus’ Angelic powers, gains access to God Ki and Ultra Instinct, and becomes stronger than the Gods. Goku called Moro the toughest opponent he ever fought before the villain unlocked Ultra Instinct, so Moro at full power is unimaginably powerful.

Even then, Whis catches one of Moro’s punches like it’s nothing – and not just any punch, either. After Moro’s body starts rejecting Merus’ God Ki, he fuses himself with the Earth and starts draining every living thing’s life force. Planet Moro quickly starts surpassing Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku, but when he tries hitting Whis, the Angel blocks the blow with his finger and instructs Goku on how to end the fight. In the end, Goku just barely lands the killing blow, and he needed help from Vegeta’s Force Spirit Fission and Uub’s God Ki.

Whis Taught Goku That He Still Hadn’t Unlocked Ultra Instinct’s Full Potential

Whis’ most recent fight was years ago, at the start of the Granolah the Survivor Saga. Following the end of the Moro Saga, Whis ramps up Goku’s training to get him thinking about Ultra Instinct as more than just a transformation. The arc offers a brief glimpse of a match between Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku and Whis, where the Angel puts Goku’s mastery to its test. Goku doesn’t do too bad battling Whis, all things considered.

He fails to pull off a multi-after image strategy to trick Whis, but it would have worked on any other foe. Goku also manages to keep up with Whis fairly well. That being said, the only reason Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku can even accomplish what he does in the fight is because Whis is actively letting him. If Whis wanted to, he could easily knock Goku out of Ultra Instinct before he realized anything had even happened.

Whis is the Only Person Beerus Has Ever Lost To

According to Beerus himself, Whis is the only person he’s ever lost a fight to. Whis also happens to be Beerus’ martial arts master, so it makes sense Beerus would have lost to Whis during his studies. Worth noting, there’s been no indication that Beerus has beaten Whis at any point in their relationship. An Angel beating a Destroyer makes sense, but Beerus is the strongest God of Destruction, so it’s still a great feat on Whis’ part.

As seen in Battle of Gods, Beerus is still powerful and dangerous when he’s holding back. The Dragon Ball Super manga also reveals that Beerus can use Ultra Instinct, which he learned from Whis. His mastery isn’t as refined as Goku’s, but the fact Beerus can use Ultra Instinct at all speaks to just how impressive a warrior he is. A flashback of one of Beerus and Whis’ fights would be great to see before Dragon Ball Super ends.

Vados Apparently Defeated Whis Long Ago

Vados was the second Angel introduced after Whis in Dragon Ball Super. For a time, it seemed like the story was heading in a direction where Vados would be more powerful than Whis. According to herself, Vados was actually stronger than Whis and beat him in the distant past. Hundreds, if not thousands, of years have passed since, and Whis has only gotten stronger, however.

Vados may have trained Champa, but Whis trained Beerus, the strongest God of Destruction. That alone is proof of his power. Vados likely wouldn’t be able to beat Whis today. Compared to his other opponents, Vados must have been Whis’ greatest battle, especially if her claim about beating him are actually legitimate. If nothing else, Vados’ comment confirms that Angels can in fact fight each other.

The Grand Priest is Whis’ Father & the Second-Strongest Being in the Multiverse

It’s never been confirmed if Whis and the Grand Priest have actually fought, but considering the Grand Priest is the father of all Angels, a master of Ultra Instinct, and canonically the second-most powerful person in the multiverse, it stands to reason that Whis would have trained under the Grand Priest. Dragon Ball is a series that operates on the importance of martial arts. Naturally, the Gods would be martial artists who occasionally spar.

The Grand Priest governs all 12 universes on Zeno’s behalf, so he’d have to make sure the Angels are all strong enough to keep their Destroyers in check. There’s really no telling what an Angel fight would look like. The Angels are so much stronger than the rest of the Dragon Ball multiverse, that Whis has never even gotten close to using his real power on screen. Everything Whis is capable of, the Grand Priest should be able to do tenfold.
