Gunmen and police officers reportedly shot at popular YouTuber Charles Wright during a road trip through Ethiopia.
British YouTuber Charles Wright took to social media to share a harrowing ordeal he encountered while driving through Ethiopia.
Wright, known online as CharlesWorldTravel, posted a video on Instagram on August 7, 2026, showing footage dated July 19 in which he was struck by a bullet during a car trip through the country. The shot came from a man armed with an AK-47:
“One AK-47 round ricocheted off the road, punched through the floor of my car, and lodged in my right heel.”
According to Wright, he kept driving for about 500 kilometres, roughly 24 hours, with the bullet lodged in his foot before he could get proper medical help. He has said he did not immediately realise he had been shot, since he had injured the same foot in a soccer match earlier that day.
Days later, he says a separate frightening episode unfolded when he took a wrong turn near an unmarked checkpoint. Federal police officers stationed there reportedly opened fire on his car.
The Derbyshire native was travelling alone in a 2004 one-litre Toyota Yaris, which he has nicknamed Dynamo. He spent 32 days in Ethiopia as part of a larger overland trip across the African continent.
The first attack, by Wright’s account, took place while he was passing through a conflict zone near Kobo, close to the border between the Tigray and Amhara regions.
He says two men in plainclothes signalled for him to stop his vehicle. Wright initially eased off the accelerator, but when he spotted one of the men readying an AK-47, he made a split-second decision to speed up instead and get away from the scene:
“While driving through the active conflict zone near Kobo, on the Tigray–Amhara state border, two civilian-dressed men tried to stop my car. One was carrying an AK-47. As I drove past, I saw him preparing to fire, so I accelerated. He then ran behind my car and fired two single shots.”
Unable to press on toward the capital, Addis Ababa, Wright was eventually taken to Dawa Haya Hospital in Awash, where doctors operated to remove the bullet from his foot.
Power Went Out During Charles Wright’s Operation
Wright reported in one of his videos that a power outage slightly interrupted the surgery he underwent after being shot during his road trip through Ethiopia.
During the operation, the hospital reportedly lost electricity. Wright said there was no emergency lighting available at the time, leaving the medical team to continue working with the help of cellphone flashlights.
According to his account, the doctors carried on with the procedure for around 10 minutes before normal power was restored:
“Instead, I had no choice but to undergo surgery in a small village hospital with limited equipment. Then, halfway through the operation, the power went out for 10 minutes. The surgeons carried on using phone torches while my adrenaline went through the roof. Watching surgical gloves being used on mobile phones, door handles, and other non-sterile surfaces before returning to the operation only added to my fears.”
In a later video, the British YouTuber also credited Dr. Nils Heim, a Cranio-Maxillofacial and Plastic Facial Surgeon, for his support throughout the treatment process.
