On October 29, 2026, popular podcast Cheeky Pint hosted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on its latest episode. Among several other topics, Altman discussed the disadvantages of individuals owning RAM in their personal computers, arguing that it would be better allocated to data centers. Claiming that local inference does not address the problem, he had this to say at the 29-minute mark:

“A lot of people want local inference, and somehow, they assume that the problem is solved now. Because we are going to have open-source models. We’re going to be able to run them on our computers. And so we’re not going to need all the stuff in the data center. But from, like, a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. And being used five percent of the time. You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment.”

Several popular social media accounts, including Pubity on X, shared clips and posts highlighting Altman’s comments about personal RAM ownership. Social media users took to the internet to share their reactions to the OpenAI CEO’s controversial remarks. They wrote:

“You don’t hate billionaires enough,” said X user @LEWDARIUM.

“Bro YOU are the reason the ‘world’s limited supply’ even exists in the first place,” stated @ChaseMHealy on X.

“Ah yes Sam but the personal computer industry actually turns a profit,” commented X user @Merlin_FGC1.

“Why are we still putting up with this guy,” wrote @fordreboot on X.

On the Cheeky Pint podcast, Sam Altman spoke about the creative tools available for various creative endeavors. Using video games as an example, Altman explained that children today have access to far more advanced technology than he did growing up, when he had fewer tools to bring creative ideas to life. He said:

“There is this spirit of just, like, unbelievable creative unleash in people using these tools. You see it in kids particularly…. I remember what it was like when I first got a computer with internet, and I could, like, do all these things that adults just couldn’t even think to ask for. And watching an eight- or ten-year-old make a complete video game with some crazy ideas they have that, like, no adult would really have and expect that to just be the way that technology is going to work for the rest of their lives, and in fact, getting better and better…. And now you can have, like, a full 3D video game.”
