Woman accused of posing as a substitute teacher to berate students because she “hates kids”

A 23-year-old woman allegedly bluffed her way into a substitute teaching gig at her old Milwaukee high school, but teaching was never the plan.

Masquerading as staff usually takes some legwork, as the scammers who siphoned over $100 million from an Italian bank learned when they had to clone a lawyer’s voice with AI first. Amy Jones allegedly needed only a sign-in sheet and a staffing gap, although getting inside turned out to be the tame part.

Fake substitute allegedly berated Rufus King students because she was bored

Jones, a former Rufus King International High School student, slipped past security by blending in with students, according to court filings reported by FOX6 News Milwaukee.

She then overheard office staff discussing the school’s substitute agency, claimed she worked for it and signed the sub sheet on September 24. That day eight teachers were absent and only seven had cover, so the filings say she simply “got lucky.”

A real teacher stayed with her for the first 20 minutes, but once that teacher ducked out, students said Jones traded the lesson for profanity, racial slurs and sexual comments while she sorted the class by race and gender and blasted rap music. She allegedly called one student “fat boy,” TMJ4 reported, and asked whether anyone had a vape or weed because the class was “so f***ing lame and annoying.”

After students alerted staff, police escorted her out. When officers interviewed her days later, she allegedly said she was bored and hated kids, then snapped her fingers and danced at the thought of becoming “famous,” according to the affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

Prosecutors charged Jones with one count of impersonating a public employee and five counts of exposing a child to harmful descriptions, all felonies. At her first court appearance, defense attorney Michael Cerniglia said she manages bipolar disorder and was off her medication after a delayed prescription delivery.

He added that police had picked her up at a psychiatric facility where she admitted herself after the incident, FOX6 reported. Badillo, meanwhile, admitted in a letter to families that the office failed to check Jones against Frontline, the district’s substitute system, and said there was “no excuse” for the lapse. Jones is due back in court on October 20.

Picture day is getting its own shake-up too, as some parents have started cutting out the photographer and asking ChatGPT for school portraits instead.
