On October 5, 2026, Vice President JD Vance reacted to Donald Trump’s announcement. At a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, the president signed an executive order that temporarily permits the use of tax-free red dye diesel for highway purposes, waiving the off-road requirement. He also said he would lower fuel expenses by deferring the federal diesel tax. The official White House Rapid Response account on X shared a clip of the rally, with the caption:

“BREAKING: @POTUS just signed an Executive Order to immediately cut diesel costs by temporarily allowing highway use of tax-free dyed diesel and deferring the federal diesel tax on that fuel through the end of the year — no interest, no penalties.”

Vance reacted to the executive order, praising Trump for tackling “an urgent issue.” Claiming that the current administration is working hard to help farmers, he wrote this on X:

“Another example of President Trump acting quickly to tackle an urgent issue. In this administration, we’re fighting every day to help hard-working Americans, especially our farmers.”

At the rally in Nebraska, Donald Trump amped up the crowd by announcing the executive order. Although the president said he didn’t know what red dye diesel was, he officially waived the off-road requirement. Claiming he was going to do what former President Joe Biden was supposedly unable to do, he had this to say:

“For many years, farm vehicles, construction equipment, and other off-road vehicles have used what is known as red dye diesel… I don’t know what the **** it is… Which is exactly the same as normal diesel but is sold tax-free for off-road vehicles and big trucks… So tonight, I’m going to sign a historic executive order to officially waive the off-road requirement and allow anyone to purchase tax-free red dye diesel… I’m gonna do what Joe Biden couldn’t do: sign this signature.”
