“We Really Do Earnestly Believe AI Could Kill All Humans!”: Anthropic Alignment Science Lead Rings the Warning Bell

A former 27-year-old AI researcher at Anthropic has raised a warning about the speed at which artificial intelligence is advancing, arguing that leading AI companies are moving toward systems that could become difficult to control.

On September 8, 2026, AI researcher Jacob Coxon took to X to announce that he had resigned from Anthropic after spending the past three years working on pretraining research at OpenAI and Anthropic. Coxon said he was leaving the AI industry because he no longer believed that companies were acting responsibly in their race to develop increasingly capable systems:

“I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.”

A few minutes after Coxon published his post, Anthropic’s Alignment Science Lead Evan Hubinger reshared it and publicly agreed with key parts of Coxon’s warning. Hubinger said Coxon was correct and stated that researchers at Anthropic “really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans.” He added that, based on his own assessment, he believes there is a greater than 10% chance of AI killing all humans within the next decade.

“Jacob is correct here. We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.”

Jacob Coxon Issued More Warnings About the Future of AI

Coxon also argued in his post that AI development is moving rapidly toward self-improving systems. He warned that researchers working on the technology genuinely believe future AI systems could become capable of causing catastrophic harm to humanity:

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible – but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”

But harming humans was not the only revelation made by Jacob Coxon regarding the future of artificial intelligence. In his resignation post, the former Anthropic researcher also outlined other risks he believes could emerge as AI systems become more capable.

Coxon suggested that AI could eventually become powerful enough to hack into computer systems, raising concerns about how such capabilities could be misused. He also warned that advanced AI could potentially transform entire industries almost overnight by solving complex problems at a speed that humans cannot match:

“Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.”

These predictions remain possibilities rather than established capabilities of today’s AI systems. However, Coxon’s comments add to the growing debate among AI researchers about how quickly the technology could advance.
