Trump claims that Russia and Ukraine had agreed on a ceasefire and to halt the attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure.

US President Donald Trump reportedly insisted in an October 12, 2026 statement that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. This is despite neither Moscow nor Kyiv confirming the arrangement.
Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, as reported by The Kyiv Independent, Trump defended his claim after a reporter noted that neither side had publicly confirmed the alleged ceasefire.
“They agreed,” Trump said. “Do you know why? Because I said they agreed. That’s why. They agreed because I said they agreed. And that thing has to get settled.”
Trump announced the proposed energy ceasefire on October 11, 2026. However, a senior Ukrainian official reportedly told The Kyiv Independent that Ukraine had received no prior information about the arrangement.

Russian Attacks Continue After Trump’s Ceasefire Announcement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the statement. He said Kyiv was prepared to accept the ceasefire if it had been negotiated between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“If President Trump negotiated it with (Vladimir) Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready, and we will accept it,” Zelensky told Axios.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on October 12, 2026, that Russia had nothing to announce regarding the proposed energy ceasefire.
Hours after Trump’s announcement, Russia struck Kharkiv’s CHP-5 power plant. Overnight attacks on October 11-12 also reportedly killed at least 10 people and injured 69 others across Ukraine. The Russian forces reportedly continued targeting residential buildings and energy infrastructure.
