Super Mario Galactic Wonder Quietly Announced

The Super Mario franchise’s staying power is uncontested, even among Nintendo’s excellent library of IP, and an upcoming release combines Super Mario Galaxy with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Even as the series moves between 2D platformers, 3D adventure games, and experimental spin-offs, the biggest Super Mario games remain popular long after launch.

Both Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario Galaxy have earned strong reviews, although they approach platforming differently. Super Mario Bros. Wonder received widespread praise for its creative level design, Wonder Flowers, and unpredictable gameplay twists, while Super Mario Galaxy became a standout 3D platformer thanks to its imaginative planets, gravity-based mechanics, and orchestral soundtrack. Their strengths make them natural inspiration for unique projects, particularly one bringing the scale and atmosphere of Super Mario Galaxy into a side-scrolling Super Mario game.

That is the idea behind Super Mario Galactic Wonder, a mod for the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder that adds 10 new levels inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel. Announced and developed by Team Fury, the fan project reimagines elements from the iconic Super Mario Galaxy games within Wonder’s 2D platforming framework. A trailer published on YouTube offers an early look at the expansion, showing how the team is bringing Galaxy-inspired ideas into the newer game.

The project draws on more than the visual style of Super Mario Galaxy, with its new stages incorporating familiar themes, enemies, items, and environments from the 3D games. Those elements are adapted to fit Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s side-scrolling gameplay, giving players a different way to revisit ideas from the Galaxy adventures. The trailer provides a preview of what’s in development, although a complete level list and a full breakdown of the new content have not been confirmed.

Super Mario Galactic Wonder is planned for 2027, though Team Fury has not announced a specific release date. The mod is described as free, with access shared through the Discord link in the trailer’s YouTube description. Players should expect to need a modded Nintendo Switch or a compatible emulation setup to play it, alongside a legitimate copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. As with other fan-made projects, the exact installation process and compatibility may depend on the setup being used.

Super Mario Galactic Wonder‘s combination of Super Mario Galaxy’s ideas and Wonder’s mechanics gives fans another reason to revisit the 2D platformer. Ultimately, the mod could offer a fresh way to experience familiar concepts while players wait for Nintendo’s next major 3D Mario game.
