Super Mario 64 is now playable in-browser thanks to a YouTube video that combines the site’s 360°-view spherical video player with closed captions.
In June, YouTube channels Atlas Arcade and Animated Subtitles shared a video that allowed Mario Kart to be played in a YouTube video. The video allows players to take control of a selection of characters, and navigate a course that looks like Rainbow Road.
Now, using the same features as the Mario Kart video, YouTube user Rovertronic has posted their own video that allows users to play Super Mario 64 in their browser.
You can play Bob-omb Battlefield and Bowser in the Dark World
The experience is made possible by combining YouTube’s 360°-view spherical video player with closed captions that are designed to resemble Mario and his movements. The gameplay itself is pre-recorded, but the interactive elements give the illusion that you’re playing it.
It opens with a brief calibration section explaining the mechanics and what you need to have enabled during playback, before launching into the Peach’s Castle Courtyard. It takes you through to Bob-omb Battlefield, including a boss fight with King Bob-omb.
Following that, you exit the level and head to Bowser in the Dark World. After falling through the trap door, Mario navigates the platforms, briefly making use of the Metal Mario power-up, and the video ends with the Bowser boss fight.
The video has been made for mobile and desktop devices. Users will have to turn on closed captions for the full experience.
