Rockstar Officially Reveals Over 170 Animal Species for GTA 6

Rockstar Games has spent years pushing its open worlds toward greater levels of detail, and GTA 6 looks set to continue that trend in a major way. The fictional state of Leonida is Rockstar’s take on Florida, so its world needs to account for more than just busy streets, beaches, swamps, and crowded cities. Florida’s wildlife is a major part of its identity, and GTA 6 seems ready to embrace some of that ecosystem’s stranger parts.

The wildlife of GTA 6 will also give Rockstar another opportunity to build on technology developed during the Red Dead Redemption series. Red Dead Redemption 2 was already known for its detailed animal behavior and huge variety of creatures, with wildlife playing an important role in exploration and hunting. Leonida gives Rockstar an entirely different environment to work with, though, one where animals can live across land, air, and water in an ecosystem inspired by the real-world state.

GTA 6 will feature more than 170 animal species throughout Leonida, as confirmed in a recent interview with Game Informer. What’s more, this includes several animals that have simply never appeared in an open-world Rockstar game before. The lineup will include familiar Florida animals such as flamingos, manatees, pelicans, and alligators, alongside invasive species including green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaque monkeys. The sheer variety should make wildlife a much more noticeable part of exploring GTA 6, particularly as players move between the state’s very different environments.

As revealed by GI, Rockstar is also expanding the visual technology behind the animals in GTA 6. The studio is building on its work with wildlife in Red Dead Redemption, with animals capable of displaying details such as iridescence, bioluminescence, and translucency. Different feather types are also being supported, while new hair and fur systems are being used to create more detailed coats and pelts. Those additions should help make the animals of GTA 6 feel more appropriately suited to the wide range of environments found throughout Leonida.

Some of the wildlife in GTA 6 will even give players a reason to actively search for it. Rockstar has categorized certain animals as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary, although the identities of these more difficult-to-find creatures remain secret for now. The system could give exploration another layer beyond simply encountering whatever happens to wander into the player’s path, particularly for anyone interested in finding everything Grand Theft Auto 6‘s open world has hidden away.

With more than 170 species spread across land, air, and sea, GTA 6 is treating Leonida’s world systems and wildlife as more than background decoration. The combination of Florida’s real-world animals, invasive species, Rockstar’s increasingly detailed animal technology, and hidden Legendary creatures gives players plenty of reasons to pay attention to what is moving around outside the roads and cities. Rockstar is still keeping most of Leonida’s rarest wildlife secret, but GTA 6 already appears to have one of the most varied ecosystems the studio has created.
