Modern Warfare 4’s new “Server Culling” feature will make wall hacks useless

Modern Warfare 4 devs Infinity Ward have unveiled a new system to keep the new game safe from cheaters using wall hacks.

Cheating is an ongoing issue in Call of Duty, and Activision has taken plenty of steps in recent years to tackle the problem. Despite this, the company recently revealed that the cheat market is making $8.5 billion a year.

One of the most common hacks seen in CoD and other multiplayer shooters is wall hacks, which allow users to see the locations of enemies through obstacles. This gives them a huge advantage, as they know when a player is coming around a corner, while the opponent is completely unaware.

However, in MW4, wall hacks won’t be anywhere near as effective, thanks to a new feature being rolled out.

MW4 is tackling wall hacks with new feature built into maps

In an October 2 announcement, the devs explained that wall hacks work by providing the user with location data being shared between game clients. This information isn’t visible to the average player, but hacks grant access to it and mark where enemies are.

However, every map in MW4 has “occlusion layers” built into its environments. This means that walls and buildings obstruct location data from being shared if there’s no way that a player would be able to see them.

“A wall can now do more than block your view. It also prevents an opponent’s location data from reaching your game client until that opponent appears in view,” the video reveals. “The cheat software can’t reveal information it never receives.”

“We expect this new system to disturb the cheat marketplace, but we’re not sitting on our hands and continue to strengthen our layer technology,” the video continues.

The system is named “Server Culling” and won’t impact the experience for anyone not using cheats, so they will still look and play exactly the same. Instead, it is already built into the objects found on each map.

It applies to every launch map, DMZ, and any maps released from Season 1 onwards in both multiplayer and Warzone.

So, it will also be implemented on Shipment, which Infinity Ward recently confirmed was returning to the series.
