Donald Trump claims he would impose a ban on news outlets like CNN, MS NOW, and Politico for reporting “fake news.”
On September 18, 2026, President Donald Trump announced that he is banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. In his Truth Social post, he also accused the Biden administration of paying Politico $8 million in government subscriptions. He cited “fake news” as the reason for the ban, suggesting that said outlets report only falsehoods. Trump wrote:
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MS NOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them “alive.” Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
Trump stated that media organizations should not have the leeway to report “FICTION and LIES.” In his Truth Social post, he alleges that these outlets cover the Trump administration unfairly. He wrote:
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Trump had alleged in his post that Politico received government subsidies under the Biden administration. Politico addressed those claims, stating that they “have been thoroughly debunked.” The outlet wrote:
“POLITICO will continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones. We will vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them. The claims that POLITICO received government subsidies are false and have been thoroughly debunked.”
