A man armed with a homemade flamethrower set fire to a garage in Washington, then escaped on a golf cart with his dog, leaving the homeowner inside.
A 47-year-old man in Port Orchard, Washington arrived outside the open garage next to a home. Surveillance footage showed that the man drove up on a golf cart, with a dog resting on the passenger seat.
The man also had with him a DIY flamethrower, made from a weed burner that was hooked up to a propane tank situated on the back of his golf cart. He used it to set the frame of the garage doorway on fire.
The whole garage was ablaze in minutes
The man added a liquid that exacerbated the issue, and soon the whole garage was engulfed in flames. The homeowner was inside the house, completely unaware of what was happening next door.
The suspect then fled the scene using the golf cart, before being confronted by a neighbor who witnessed the incident. According to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the man told the neighbor that he was with the fire department, before waving a lit torch at him and trying to run him down.
The neighbor flagged down a Washington State Trooper who booked the suspect into the Kitsap County Jail on suspicion of first degree arson and second degree assault. According to the New York Post, he was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.
The homeowner was not hurt. He said had no idea who the suspect was, or why he would try to burn down his home in particular. The damages were estimated to be between $150,000-175,000, and a car valued at $25,000 was destroyed.
