Instagram takes aim at YouTube with new 90-minute video test

Instagram is testing a new feature that lets creators upload videos up to 90 minutes long, moving beyond the platform’s usual short-form content.

The test begins October 26 with select creators in the US, allowing them to post longer videos, including podcasts, interviews, and other entertainment content.

The move comes as Instagram looks to compete with YouTube, which has become a major platform for long-form videos and podcasts.

Instagram tests 90-minute videos with new feature

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Instagram’s new tool, called Features, will let creators link their short Reels to full-length videos.

For example, someone watching a podcast clip on Instagram will be able to tap through and watch the entire episode without leaving the app.

“What you’re now going to be able to do is, you see a clip of a podcast that you love, you can just click and continue watching or watch the full video, and you’ll be able to dive in and see the whole thing because creators are going to be able to link these Reels to their overall feature,” said Instagram vice president Tessa Lyons.

Instagram previously tested the feature in Brazil and plans to expand it to tens of thousands of US creators.

The longer videos will also appear on the Explore page and other parts of Instagram, helping users discover new content.

Early creators testing the feature include podcast host Emma Grede, beauty creator Monet McMichael, interviewer Preston Rakovsky, and football creator Donald De La Haye.

Creators won’t have to make their videos exclusive to Instagram and can continue using existing advertising deals.

Instagram also plans to help creators find new advertising partnerships.

Instagram plans to bring longer videos to TVs

While the new feature will initially be available on mobile, Instagram eventually wants users to watch longer videos through its TV app.

Instagram for TV is available on Samsung, Fire TV, and Google TV, with support expanding to Apple TV in the US.

“We think the best viewing experience for long-form horizontal content is on a big horizontal screen, and so I think that that is where we will expect a lot of the deep consumption to happen over time,” Lyons said.

Instagram is also testing a feature called Series, which lets creators organize episodic Reels on their profiles. The company plans to expand Series testing to the US by late 2026 or early 2027.

Instagram is also testing live videos in the Reels tab, allowing broadcasts to reach people who don’t follow the creator. That feature is launching in Brazil and Indonesia, with a US rollout planned for 2027.

For now, Instagram hasn’t announced when 90-minute videos will become available to everyone.
