Hero dog leads police to owner after they were stuck on floor for hours

A dog in Kansas is being praised after leading a police officer back to its home, where its owner had reportedly been lying on the floor for more than three hours.

The encounter happened in Leawood, Kansas, on September 17, when an officer spotted the dog wandering through a residential neighborhood while still attached to its leash.

Bodycam footage shared by the Leawood Police Department shows the dog barking at the officer before beginning to make its way home. Rather than leaving, the officer decided to follow.

Dog leads officer directly back to owner

“Hi, why don’t you go on back home?” the officer can be heard telling the dog during the encounter.

The officer returned to his patrol car and followed the dog for roughly half a block before it turned into a driveway. Another dog was waiting at the property as the officer approached.

“Is this where you live?” he asked before noticing that the home’s garage door was open.

After approaching the house, the officer discovered the homeowner lying on the floor and asked if they were okay.

“The resident had been there for more than three hours,” the Leawood Police Department said. “Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed.”

Medics treated the owner, who police said is now recovering at home.

The bodycam footage has since gone viral on Facebook, where viewers praised both the dog and the officer for their roles in getting the homeowner help.

“One dog stayed to protect the owner; the other dog went to look for help,” one person commented.

“Good boy, he’d better get a steak dinner soon!” another wrote, while someone else joked that their own dog would “raid the kitchen with no care in the world” in the same situation.

Others credited the officer for recognizing the dog’s behavior and deciding to follow it.

“This is incredible! Way to go pup! And great job to this wonderful officer for paying so much attention,” one viewer wrote.

“What a good pup! Kudos to your officer for listening to the pup and following it home! The outcome could have been much different if not for the pup and your officer,” another added.

It’s not the first time a dog has been credited with getting help for someone after a fall. In 2025, a dog similarly went viral after leading a deputy to its owner’s grandmother, who had fallen outside her home and was unable to get back up.
