Rockstar’s Netflix special for GTA 6 is being built to win over viewers who are not already committed to buying the game on day one, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.
Rockstar announced on August 6 that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix at 3 PM ET on August 27. As detailed in our original coverage, the presentation will remain exclusive to Netflix for six hours before appearing on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and GTA 6 website at 9 PM ET.
While Rockstar has not explained exactly what the extended look will contain, Zelnick has now revealed why it is being presented through Netflix instead of debuting as a traditional YouTube trailer.
GTA 6 reveal will feel like a Netflix show
During a Bloomberg Breakdown, reporter Jason Schreier asked Zelnick whether the extended look would feel like viewers were watching a Netflix show.
“Yes,” Zelnick replied.
The Take-Two CEO said viewers will understand why Rockstar chose Netflix once the special premieres, describing it as a “must-see event.”
Schreier explained that the strategy is designed to reach beyond GTA 6’s established audience. That includes non-gaming Netflix viewers and people who may be interested in GTA 6 but are not currently planning to buy it on day one.
Rockstar GamesNetflix’s own announcement uses similar language. The company described the partnership as “the next generation of storytelling and content on Netflix.”
Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction series, said the platform wants to become a place where “the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”
Rockstar’s attempt to find an even wider audience comes despite GTA 6 already recording enormous demand. Schreier reported that pre-orders vastly surpassed Take-Two’s internal forecasts, while Zelnick has described them as “exceptional”.
Rockstar still has not confirmed the special’s runtime or whether it will be a documentary, developer deep dive, or extended gameplay presentation. GTA 6 launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
