God of War Laufey’s Delay Could Be a Huge Win for PlayStation

God of War Laufey has officially been delayed, and I was initially upset about waiting a few more months until it was possible to step into Faye’s powerful shoes. When it comes to the 2027 game calendar, God of War Laufey is the one I’m most excited about, so the delay definitely stings, but it’s the right call if it means a better game. Beyond the obvious upside of delays allowing developers more time to fine-tune the experience, God of War Laufey being pushed back to mid 2027 could actually work in PlayStation’s favor in a huge way.

It’s no secret that PlayStation and Sony have had a rough 2026. The backlash caused by Sony ending physical disc production is one of several controversies that the company has found itself in. In many ways, God of War Laufey looked like the key to getting everything back on track by kicking off 2027 with a bang. PlayStation might not get to debut a new God of War game early in the year like it wanted to, but the bright side is that Laufey‘s delay now makes the PS5’s 2027 launch calendar look far less bleak.

God of War Laufey’s Delay Helps Out PlayStation’s 2027 Game Release Woes

There are currently only two PS5 exclusives confirmed for 2027: God of War Laufey and Until Dawn 2. As much as I love the first Until Dawn game, God of War Laufey is clearly a much bigger game than its sequel. Both games look exciting for very different reasons, but with the duo being the only two games confirmed for Sony’s 2027 calendar, it was strange that the company planned to release the exclusives so close together.

Rearrange the movies into the correct US release order.

Until Dawn 2‘s release date is confirmed for January 28, while God of War Laufey was originally supposed to launch on February 16, before the delay. That puts only two weeks between exclusives, leaving the rest of the 2027 calendar completely barren after that. Before the God of War Laufey delay, PlayStation and Sony were facing a game launch wasteland after February. More exclusives could definitely be announced before the year is up, especially at The Game Awards. However, the current state of PlayStation’s exclusive lineup leaves little to be excited about next year.

The bright side is that Laufey‘s delay now makes the PS5’s 2027 launch calendar look far less bleak.

God of War Laufey‘s new release date is officially May 20. The only other big game eyeing that date right now is the Persona 4 Revival Switch 2 port. There isn’t really going to be much overlap there, which gets rid of a lot of competition. Unless something changes and a lot of other AAA games confirm a May 2027 launch window, God of War Laufey has that month locked down. So, Santa Monica Studio’s decision to delay God of War Laufey is a double dose of good news for PlayStation, because it gives the Until Dawn sequel more space to shine and Laufey has a much stronger claim on an entire month instead of just a short window in February.

February was a rough month for God of War Laufey to originally be in, anyway. I mean, since it’s a God of War game, it was bound to still sell well during this month, but there was a lot more competition to worry about. Metro 2039 and Fable are also set to launch in February 2027. There may not be a large amount of overlap between fans of the Metro games and God of War, but Fable definitely would have been a competitor. Granted, the God of War games and Fable franchise have vastly different takes on gameplay and world design. Both releasing in February could have forced gamers to pick one fantasy universe over the other, though.

God of War Laufey Looks Like the Only Exclusive Action-Adventure Blockbuster PlayStation Has to Offer in 2027

There currently aren’t any known plans for Sony to announce a new PlayStation exclusive any time soon. The Game Awards always feature plenty of surprises, and one of those hopefully turns out to be from Sony. Otherwise, Until Dawn 2 and God of War Laufey have to do some seriously heavy lifting to make it feel like owning a PS5 in 2027 is worth it. The PS5 era has left a lot of players disappointed, and having more than just two games scheduled for next year would help ease the frustration.

Rumors and speculation have claimed that an Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet release date could soon be confirmed for 2027, but there are no clear signs that Naughty Dog plans to debut its newest project next year. The latter half of 2027 would make a lot of sense for a Naughty Dog game launch, but it’s just as possible that the studio’s new IP doesn’t come out until 2028. Next year’s PlayStation lineup could grow, but if it doesn’t, God of War Laufey‘s delay could ultimately be what saves the company’s calendar from feeling dead.
