Singer and actress Selena Gomez sparked discussions across social media after revealing on October 18, 2026, that vaping nicotine permanently altered her speaking voice and confirming that she recently quit the habit.

In the Instagram clip, which was highlighted by accounts like Pop Base, the 34-year-old Wizards of Waverly Place star urged viewers to avoid e-cigarettes. Addressing ongoing questions about how she sounds, Gomez stated:

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot and just so everyone knows, that’s somewhat … vaped. Nicotine is so hard to quit and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or even if you’re trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.”

The former Disney star added that she understands if audiences dislike her current vocal tone:

“It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice so if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind, just don’t listen. But I am really excited, because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up.”

Defending Gomez on Reddit, user u/Colemania18 commented:

“She’s both giving a PSA for what she feels is important of not vaping and also responding to all the people that have been talking about how her voice has changed.”

u/Adventurous_Algae671 posted on Reddit, sharing their personal struggles:

“H*ll i thought about moving to cigarettes, instead i’m just trying to wean myself off the vape.”

Addressing Gomez’s autoimmune condition on Reddit, user u/kattylovesfoood noted:

“I’m probably on a similar medication as Selena Gomez (immunosuppressant) and you have to be very careful and you can’t even drink much really. She probably has a higher dose even because of the transplant so she needs to be extremely careful because the medication is hard on the liver and kidneys as it is. I’m sure she knows this as a grown adult and I guess it’s her choice at the end of the day, she’s just not a good role model at all and clearly has a lot of issues.”

The singer had undergone a kidney transplant in 2017 following her Lupus diagnosis. In reference to this, u/Indy2561 commented:

“I’m sure her donor loves learning her sacrifice is being thwarted.”

Questioning whether vaping caused the change, Redditor u/OPSimp45 remarked:

“She always had a rather raspy voice as is.”

Selena Gomez’s History With Smoking and Vaping Explored Amid Medical Warnings and Celebrity Reactions

In 2012, Gomez first addressed her cigarette use in an Interview Magazine piece, stating that she had never smoked a cigarette until crew members taught her how to smoke for Spring Breakers. Following her Lupus diagnosis, she entered a voluntary treatment facility in 2014. Gomez was later photographed holding a vape in Rome in 2018, and she appeared with a vape in an October 2025 wedding video filmed by Taylor Swift before Gomez married Benny Blanco. Previously, during a December 2025 Instagram live, Gomez told viewers that her ‘throat kind of swells on the inside sometimes.’

With the cultural rise of e-cigarettes, Gallup data shows that 8% of U.S. adults vape, compared to 11% who smoke traditional cigarettes. According to a January 2025 CDC National Center for Health Statistics report, vaping prevalence is highest among young adults, reaching 15.5% among those aged 21 to 24 and 12.6% among those aged 25 to 34.

Meanwhile, a study in the National Library of Medicine (Lungova et al.) found that e-cigarette vapor induces vocal fold epithelial injury and mucosal remodeling. Furthermore, a March 2026 Center for Vocal Health report noted that heated vegetable glycerin aerosols irritate the larynx, causing hoarseness and reduced vocal range.

Gomez joins other singers who have publicly discussed quitting vaping. Singer Doja Cat has an on-and-off relationship with vaping and recently admitted that she is trying to quit. According to the Daily Mail, pop star Lily Allen is also attempting to quit.

Gomez and her team have yet to provide any further updates on the matter.
