The writer and composer behind the visual novel Clannad and the anime series Angel Beats has been diagnosed with throat cancer and has chosen to focus on palliative care so he can continue creating.
On October 19, Visual Arts, the company Maeda works for, confirmed that he is currently hospitalized after being diagnosed with throat cancer.
After considering his condition and the outlook for treatment, Maeda has decided against active treatment to conserve his strength for his creative work.
The company also shared an update on his contributions to Heaven Burns Red and a new music project, which he now hopes to complete more quickly following his diagnosis.

In its official statement, Visual Arts said Maeda began experiencing throat discomfort in early spring. However, a subsequent medical examination found that the swelling and pain became more pronounced over the summer.
“After careful consideration of his condition and the outlook for treatment, Maeda has chosen not to pursue active treatment and instead to focus on palliative care, wishing to conserve his strength and devote himself to his creative work,” the company said.
Maeda has already completed his assigned writing for Heaven Burns Red’s main story through the first half of Chapter 6. He has also finished all the major story elements that will carry the narrative through the chapter’s conclusion, along with the lyrics and composition for songs featured in its first half.
However, Visual Arts said the progression of his illness could prevent him from participating in the creation of other scenarios and songs.
Amazon Maeda also worked on Angel Beats as a planner and writer, and composed the anime’s music.
Alongside his work on the game, Maeda had been developing an original music project with plans to release new songs on YouTube over the long term. His diagnosis has prompted him to change that approach.
“He felt that there was little time remaining in which he would be able to continue creating,” the statement said.
Maeda now plans to complete the songs currently in development as quickly as possible so they can reach fans. At his request, the finished works will be released on YouTube.
“Maeda is currently hospitalized, but even under these circumstances, he remains strongly determined to devote himself to creative work through to the very end,” the company said. “We would be grateful for your warm understanding and support of his wishes.”
