Political commentator Mehdi Hasan shared his reaction after reading damage reports to military bases amidst the Iran War.

Iranian strikes damaged 274 structures at 24 installations in seven countries, the Wall Street Journal found. Mehdi Hasan flagged that figure in a post on X dated October 31, 2026. The paper reviewed satellite imagery and interviewed officials.
“Imagine the GOP and Fox reaction if this had happened under Obama or Biden.
But it happened under Trump, Rubio, and Hegseth.”
He wrote that Iran had done more damage to US bases in the region “than commonly understood.”

Mehdi Hasan Shared His Reactions After Learning About US Military Base Damages During the Iran War

The Journal counted damage in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Iraq. In the first two weeks, at least 119 buildings at 13 installations showed damage, mostly in Kuwait. Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the Fifth Fleet’s home, took heavy fire and lost most personnel. The strikes also damaged radar, missile defense, and communications equipment protecting the bases. A July 17 strike on Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base killed three US service members. Satellite imagery showed the same attack damaged 19 buildings where troops slept. The Pentagon priced the damage at $5 billion or more. One person briefed on the costs put the ceiling at $15 billion. The war itself had cost $47.1 billion by October 16, before base damage.
Trump’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, called Iran’s missile program “functionally defeated” on March 13. Iran kept hitting bases for months afterward. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on October 31 that the US could still reach its military targets. From Mehdi Hasan’s perspective, people are less critical of these reports because of whose administration they land in.
