Identifying doppelgangers is what Shift at Midnight is all about. If one slips through your shop, it will come back to hunt you before the night is over. The first few shifts don’t put up much of a challenge, but the game doesn’t stay that forgiving for long. Before you know it, you will have to pay attention to every little detail if you want to avoid shooting an innocent customer or letting a doppelganger walk free. Here are some tips that helped me catch doppelgangers in Shift at Midnight.
Best Tips to Identify Doppelgangers in Shift at Midnight
Trust Your Computer
The N.E.T. records on your computer are your best source of information, so get into the habit of checking them for every customer. They include useful details like the customer’s profession, date of birth, physical features, and other identifying traits.
Once a customer reaches the counter, scan their ID to bring up their profile. Then ask them a few questions and compare their answers with the information on your computer. If something doesn’t match, you have most likely found a doppelganger.
I almost always ask about the customer’s profession first, then compare their appearance with the profile. One doppelganger gave itself away because the scar on its face was on the opposite side from what the N.E.T. records showed.
If you have checked everything, and you’re still not convinced either way, it’s usually safer to let the customer leave. It’s better than killing an innocent person.
Pay Attention to the Noticeboard
Don’t ignore the noticeboard before starting your shift. It often gives you small details about what’s happening around Midnight Town, and those details can help expose a doppelganger later.
For example, one customer claimed they had just come from the library, but I remembered the noticeboard saying it had closed down. That one lie was enough to confirm they were not human.
Use the Anomaly Lens
Later in the game, you will unlock the Anomaly Lens. It lets you see doppelgangers that are not visible to the naked eye. For example, if you have already killed Norbert, he can come back disguised as an ordinary customer. Looking at them through the Anomaly Lens reveals it’s actually Norbert.
Having said that, don’t rely on the lens alone. It won’t solve every encounter for you, so keep checking IDs and asking questions before making a decision.
Once you are sure someone is a doppelganger, take them down before they finish checking out. If you let them complete their purchase, they will still return as a monster at the end of your shift, even if you kill them before they leave the store.
Treat Every Visit as a New One
One mistake that’s easy to make is assuming a returning customer is still human. That’s not always the case. Some customers visit your shop as humans early on and can come back as doppelgangers later, so don’t skip the investigation just because you recognize them.
Clyde was a good example in my playthrough. One time he walked in and spoke as if we had never met before, even though he had already visited my shop more than once. That immediately told me something was wrong.
