Best Star Wars Galactic Racer Steam Deck Settings

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a great-looking game on capable gaming PCs and current-gen consoles. But with the game releasing on Steam and the rise in popularity of handheld PC systems, the fast-paced galactic racing action can be taken on the go. As such, some players may be wondering how Star Wars Galactic Racer performs on the Steam Deck, as well as what the best settings to use are to get the best playing experience on the system. Here’s what you need to know.

How Does Star Wars Galactic Racer Perform on the Steam Deck?

In all honesty, it can be a bit of a shaky experience. While the game does technically run on the system, it’s nowhere near as visually impressive or buttery smooth as it is on current-gen consoles or on more capable desktop or laptop PCs.

That should be expected, however, given the hardware is beginning to age and this is a AAA title with a great level of visual fidelity. Not to mention, the racing action is very fast-paced, so high framerates certainly help make things look a lot better.

That being said, if you’re willing to make some compromises, it’s more than possible to play Star Wars Galactic Racer on the Steam Deck with relatively consistent framerates.

While the game does look its best at higher framerates, the Steam Deck can’t maintain a solid 60fps. As such, you’re better off sticking to a 30 FPS target, with the following settings:

  • Textures: High
  • Anti-Aliasing: High
  • Upscaler: FSR Balanced
  • Foliage Quality: Low
  • Global Illumination Quality: Low
  • Landscape Quality: Low
  • Post Process Quality: Low
  • Reflection Quality: Low
  • Shader Quality: Low
  • Shadow Quality: Low
  • Visual Effects Quality: Low
  • View Distance Quality: Low

You should also cap the game to 30 FPS within the Steam Deck’s settings itself, rather than in the game’s settings. This offers a much better experience in my playtests.

Some players have also suggested changing the TSR (Custom Target) setting and adjusting the resolution quality to around 55-58%. This can get you around 45 FPS, but in my experience, I was getting big framerate dips when the action really heated up between multiple racers on some more visually demanding maps. As such, I’d recommend just sticking to the above settings for the time being until further optimizations can hopefully be made.

An alternative is to stream the game from your desktop PC via Moonlight, or to try and stream the game via Luna if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber. The game’s single-player experience is available to play via Luna for free. As long as your internet connection is fast and stable, this may offer a better experience, but keep in mind that streaming latency might be a big issue with the high-speed, twitch-based racing action in the game.
