Trump blames Democrats’ midterm victory for the stock market decline, expressing that it’s “such a sad thing to watch.”

President Donald Trump blamed the midterm election results for the November 5, 2026, stock market collapse. In a Truth Social post, he said Americans’ retirement savings had shrunk because Democrats won. He made the case when the Nasdaq Composite had already finished deep in correction territory.
“The Stock Market suffered one of the Worst Days in History based on the results of the Election. Such a sad thing to watch! It took so much work to get us to a level that no one has ever seen before, and then this. Your 401(k)s have, therefore, dropped. Remember, it wasn’t Republicans, it was Dumocrats. Do not fear, however, we will soon, one way or the other, be BIGGER AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he said. Trump used the pejorative ‘Dumocrats,’ a derogatory play on ‘Democrats,’ to refer to the party and its supporters.
According to a report from The Associated Press, Democrats took Senate seats in Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Maine and Iowa. James Talarico’s win in Texas was the state’s first Democratic Senate victory in more than 30 years, and Adam Hamilton became Kansas’s first Democratic senator since 1932. A tally compiled by The Independent had Democrats ahead 54 to 44 in the Senate, with Alaska and Mississippi still undecided.

Concerns Over AI Regulations Contribute to Tech Stock Selloff
The stock market saw a significant selloff with technology companies accounting for much of the damage. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52% to 24,315.00 and closed in correction territory; the S&P 500 dropped 4.36% to 7,353.73, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1,833.06 points, or 3.44%, to settle at 51,523.06, according to figures cited by Kotak Neo. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also slumped about 12%, its steepest one-day fall since March 2020, and Nvidia shed 9%, according to the report.
Trump attributed the market decline to Democratic election victories. However, investors pointed to concerns about the party’s position on AI infrastructure. Several Democratic candidates campaigned on slowing data center construction. This raised concerns among investors about the future of the AI investment boom, according to a report from Reuters.
Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa promised to pause approvals for new projects until state lawmakers pass protections for residents, as reported by The Texas Tribune. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent who caucuses with the Democrats, has called for a national moratorium on data center construction.
Trump returned to the subject in a second post on Truth Social, blaming the Democrats once again for the Wall Street crash. He closed his post with a line: “You only have yourselves to blame!”
