California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued another warning to federal agents working for President Donald Trump. He posted it to X on November 3, 2026, Election Day.
“A message to every federal agent operating on Trump’s behalf in California: If you illegally tamper with our ballots, the President won’t be able to save you. Trump can’t pardon you out of California justice.”
The Democrat has led California since 2019 and is serving his second term. He was San Francisco’s mayor and the state’s lieutenant governor before that. In September he signed 13 election protection bills, including felony penalties for seizing ballots. Those laws give state prosecutors new tools against anyone who interferes, even federal employees. He has argued for months that Trump wants to cast doubt on California’s results.

Governor Gavin Newsom Warned Federal Agents That They Cannot Escape California Justice if They Get Caught Tampering in the Election
Presidential pardons cover federal offenses, not state crimes, so state charges sit outside Trump’s reach. Any federal agent caught tampering with ballots would answer to California prosecutors, Newsom said. He signed the state election protections into law two months before the vote. A night earlier, in a video, he had already promised felony charges for tampering with ballots.
The warning carried across several posts and accounts that day. A follow-up post on the same account said interference with the vote would bring prosecution. One report covered his reply to ICE’s “no escape” warning. A second piece focused on his caution that interference brings prosecutions. Homeland Security said ICE had no plans to operate at polling sites. Federal law restricts armed agents at election sites.
