With the midterm elections leaning towards a Democrat win, Trump posted a photograph of a red baseball cap in response, with a single word stitched across the front in white capital letters: VETO. He posted it on Truth Social after networks projected that Democrats had taken the Senate and were on course to win the House.

He had earlier posted the following on his Truth Social account:

“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Trump had mentioned in a phone interview with Times reporters that he was “absolutely willing to accept those results.”

“We’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”

He further added:

“I have total veto power, so they have to come to us. And if they have some good ideas, I’m certainly open to working.”

US Midterm Elections: Wins and losses

Democrats needed a net gain of four Senate seats to take that chamber and three to take the House. They cleared both. Republicans had held the Senate 53-47, and the Associated Press called control for Democrats after flips in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa. CBS News later projected a Democratic win in Maine as well.

Kansas was the starkest result: Adam Hamilton beat incumbent Roger Marshall to become the state’s first Democratic senator since 1932. In Texas, James Talarico defeated Republican attorney general Ken Paxton, the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Texas in 38 years. Annie Andrews took South Carolina’s seat from Darline Graham, who had been appointed to the seat of her brother Lindsey Graham after his death in July. Sherrod Brown unseated Jon Husted in Ohio, and Josh Turek won in Iowa.

Democrats also held their own seats, including Jon Ossoff’s in Georgia and the open New Hampshire seat. Republicans found consolation in Florida, where Byron Donalds won the governor’s race and Ashley Moody kept a Senate seat.
