After endorsing Mike Rogers at this late time before the midterm elections, Haley Stevens became a prime target for Democrats like Brad Lander. On his personal X account, the American politician expressed his dismay towards the congresswoman.

“I didn’t think it was possible to combine primary-loser-sour-grapes & Islamophobia into a more toxic cocktail than Andrew Cuomo. But Haley Stevens has managed to do it. If she wants to betray civil rights, reproductive freedom, immigrant protections, and working families by endorsing Mike Rogers and trying to give control of the Senate to J.D. Vance and Donald Trump, I guess that’s her business — but it’s appalling, oddly patronizing, and simply false to claim that it’s in the interest of Michigan’s Jewish communities. Our safety comes from welcoming the stranger, fighting for universal human rights, and building pluralist democracy — not from endorsing neo-Nazi adjacent MAGA fanatics. Fortunately, there’s a powerful response of solidarity and shared safety, that every Jewish & non-Jewish Michigander can do on Tuesday: Vote for @AbdulElSayed,”

Among the Democrats who answered was Brad Lander, the party’s nominee for New York’s 10th Congressional District. The former New York City comptroller unseated Representative Dan Goldman in June. He is Jewish, an ally of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and a critic of Israeli military policy in Gaza. He called it a betrayal of her own voters.

Lander’s post compared Stevens to Andrew Cuomo, another Democrat who lost a primary to a progressive. He claimed she had combined “primary-loser-sour-grapes & Islamophobia” into a “more toxic cocktail.” His sharpest words went to her claim that the endorsement served Michigan’s Jewish communities. That framing, he wrote, was “appalling, oddly patronizing, and simply false.” Jewish safety, he argued, comes from “welcoming the stranger” and “building pluralist democracy.”

Lander was one of many Democrats who condemned the switch. Chuck Schumer called it “a despicable betrayal,” and Nancy Pelosi said Stevens had “chosen to dangerously betray Michigan families.” Lander and Daniel Biss issued a joint statement urging voters to support El-Sayed. His own post ended with a blunter instruction: “Vote for @AbdulElSayed.” Michigan votes on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
