Elder Scrolls VI reportedly still more than 2 years away despite Bethesda finally revealing its name

Bethesda has finally revealed the official name of The Elder Scrolls VI, but the long-awaited Skyrim follow-up could still be more than two years from release.

The game was confirmed as The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel during a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios. However, the brief announcement only showed the new logo and offered no gameplay, release window, or platform details.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier responded to the reveal on Bluesky, reminding fans that the game was originally announced alongside Starfield in 2018. He wrote that The Elder Scrolls VI was revealed partly to reassure players after Bethesda announced Fallout 76, before adding, “Sorry to say this game is still more than 2 years away!”

Bethesda reveals Sentinel after eight years of silence

The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced at Bethesda’s E3 2018 presentation, where the studio showed a short teaser featuring a mountainous landscape and confirmed that the game was in pre-production.

Since then, Bethesda has released Fallout 76, Starfield, and the Oblivion Remastered, while sharing only occasional updates about the next mainline Elder Scrolls. The title reveal arrives as Skyrim approaches its 15th anniversary, nearly eight years after fans first learned that its successor was in development.

Bethesda Game Studios said development on Sentinel is continuing, but warned that it will be “some time” before more information is ready to share. The studio’s official announcement also said it was finally revealing the game’s name and location, although the video did not provide a full breakdown of its setting.

Schreier previously said during a Bloomberg Q&A in July that The Elder Scrolls VI was “two to three years away at least.” His latest post suggests that estimate remains relevant, which would place the game in late 2028 at the earliest if development continues on its current timeline.

Bethesda has said the game is now the studio’s primary development focus, with most of its team working on it. The company also confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is being developed on Creation Engine 3 and that internal builds are playable.

That progress has given fans more information than they had in previous years, but Bethesda’s name reveal still came without a release date. For now, Sentinel has a title, a logo, and a much longer wait ahead.
