The PS6‘s release date remains one of the biggest questions surrounding future PlaySTation consoles, and Sony has acknowledged that the next-generation console could face some significant challenges. The PS5 launched in November 2020, meaning it’s approaching its sixth anniversary, and attention has increasingly turned toward what comes next with the PlayStation 6.
Historically, PlayStation consoles have launched roughly 6 or 7 years apart, making 2027 a reasonable expectation for the PS6. The PS4 arrived in 2013, followed by the PS5 in 2020, and another 7-year gap would fit that established pattern. However, things are considerably different this time around. The growth of AI has created massive shortages for important computer components, particularly memory, and the AI-led hardware shortages are not expected to disappear anytime soon.
PlayStation 6 May Release Later Than Usual
Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki has confirmed that the company still hasn’t finalized the PS6’s release date internally, explaining that it needs to monitor the situation before making a decision. As Totoki said:
“We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation.”

Totoki also warned that memory shortages are expected to continue into Sony’s 2027 fiscal year, which runs from April 2027 through March 2028. In other words, the same problems affecting the technology industry today could still be an issue throughout much of next year. This doesn’t necessarily mean the PS6 has been delayed, especially since Sony never announced a release date in the first place. However, it does raise questions about whether the rumored 2027 launch will actually happen. Sony could still target that window, but waiting until 2028 or later may give the company more time to deal with the ongoing shortages. The company is also looking into alternative means of selling its next-gen console:
“We would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy.”
Interestingly, Sony isn’t the only company that could be looking at a 2028 launch for its next-generation console. According to a recent report from Fortune, Microsoft is planning to release a new Xbox handheld during the 2027 holiday season, followed by its next major console, known as Project Helix, in late 2028. However, the biggest surprise may be its price, with Microsoft’s internal projections reportedly placing the console somewhere between $1,200 and $1,800. The final price could be lower if Microsoft decides to absorb some of the manufacturing costs, but those figures show just how expensive the next generation could become. Nothing has been confirmed regarding these release dates or prices for the Xbox Next-Gen Helix console, although the reported 2028 window is particularly interesting given the uncertainty surrounding the PS6.
Both companies appear to be facing similar challenges, and there’s a growing possibility that the next console generation won’t arrive until 2028. For now, there’s no official PS6 release date, and Sony hasn’t confirmed whether 2027 is even its intended launch window. The PS5 is still receiving major games, including GTA 6, and there’s no indication that Sony intends to stop supporting the console anytime soon.
