British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan reacted to a report from The Washington Sun that the White House is considering whether to issue broad preemptive pardons to junior administration staffers.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on October 24, 2026,  Hasan argued that the US Constitution gives Trump too much unchecked power.

“We need an urgent constitutional amendment (yes I know how mad that sounds!) to get rid of the president’s absurd and corrupt pardon power. Dem and GOP presidents alike have abused it – but especially Trump,” he said.

The move comes as conservative allies urge President Donald Trump to shield lower-ranking officials from potential criminal investigations, congressional inquiries, and lawsuits.

Trump White House Weighs Mass Preemptive Pardons for Junior Staffers

According to the mentioned report from The Washington Sun, White House attorneys are evaluating possible pardons. While a blanket pardon covering every junior employee is considered unlikely, the administration could extend clemency to officials involved in specific policy areas, including deportations, military operations and trade.

The discussions reportedly extend to a far greater number of staff members than previously disclosed. Several conservative organizations, including the Heritage Foundation and American Moment, have urged the White House counsel’s office to prepare pardons or establish funding to cover legal expenses for staff facing potential legal challenges.

Mike Davis, president of the conservative legal advocacy group Article III Project, said he plans to press the administration to take action.

“After listening to Elissa Slotkin threatening to go after young people who joined the Trump administration, President Trump should issue very broad preemptive pardons for anyone who worked for him or in his orbit,” Davis said.

The efforts reportedly intensified after Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, said that congressional investigations into Trump administration officials should make young Republicans think twice before joining the administration during its final two years.
