YouTuber arrested after finance influencer dies by suicide amid cyberbullying allegations

YouTuber Jason Samuel has been arrested in India following the death of a popular finance influencer whose family accused him of cyberbullying, harassment, and making threats.

Samuel was arrested by police in Tamil Nadu on October 22, two days after 27-year-old V Harish died by suicide at a rented property near Chennai.

According to The Indian Express, authorities registered a case under Section 108 of India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide.

Harish was known for his ‘Finance with Harish’ content, where he shared investment advice and financial tips with an audience of more than 1.3 million Instagram followers.

His father, J Vinayagam, alleged that Samuel had repeatedly targeted his son with defamatory videos, online harassment and threats, leaving him in severe mental distress.

As per DT Next, Harish’s main Instagram account was disabled in September, and a replacement account was subsequently blocked.

Harish also reportedly recorded a video before his death discussing the alleged harassment and the damage to his reputation. His father has asked investigators to examine the recording and other digital evidence.

Police have further alleged that Samuel attempted to extort money from Harish and published defamatory content about him. Investigators said witness statements and documentary evidence contributed to the decision to arrest him.

Jason Samuel denies cyberbullying allegations after Harish’s death

Days before Harish’s death, Samuel published a YouTube video titled ‘Dark world of Finance Influencers,’ questioning the credentials of creators offering financial advice online.

In the video, Samuel alleged that Harish had been providing personalized investment recommendations without holding the necessary registration from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Following Harish’s death, Samuel denied cyberbullying him and insisted that his criticism focused on financial credentials and regulatory compliance.

“I have not cyber-bullied him,” Samuel wrote in an October 20 post on X.

“I literally asked him in the video to come back and do this with a proper SEBI license. I never intended or expected this drastic measure to happen and I mourn the loss.”

In another statement reported by NDTV Profit, Samuel maintained that he had never contacted or threatened Harish.

The case has sparked debate over online harassment and the distinction between legitimate criticism of financial influencers and targeted abuse.

Disputes involving finance creators have previously escalated into violence. In July 2026, a South Korean stock YouTuber was allegedly stabbed by a viewer who reportedly lost money following his investment recommendations.

Online harassment has also been linked to concerns surrounding other creators’ deaths. In June 2025, Save A Fox YouTuber Mikayla Raines died by suicide, with her family later speaking publicly about the cyberbullying she had endured.

Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation into Harish’s death and the allegations against Samuel. Authorities have said they intend to seek his remand in judicial custody.
