Long before The Batman: Part II is released in theaters, one of Batman’s iconic villains will be appearing on the big screen in Clayface. James Watkins directs the upcoming DC Studios film, but The Batman director Matt Reeves is involved, serving in a producer role. That involvement might confuse some viewers about what connection Clayface has to the multiple continuities that exist within Warner Bros. and DC Studios.
Many different characters have held the Clayface identity throughout Batman’s history, but the character has existed in some form since the Golden Age of Comics, debuting in 1940’s Detective Comics #40. While Clayface never had the notoriety of Batman villains like the Joker and Penguin, the character gained mainstream popularity thanks to Batman: The Animated Series. The cartoon served as inspiration for Mike Flanagan, best known as the creator of Midnight Mass and Amazon’s recent Carrie reboot. Flanagan wrote the screenplay for Clayface alongside Hossein Amini.
Which DC Universe Does the Clayface Movie Take Place in?
Clayface is set in the rebooted DCU, which officially kicked off with 2025’s Superman. That places it in the same universe as movies like Supergirl and HBO’s recent Lanterns TV series. DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have integrated some elements from previous DC movies into this universe, most notably characters like Xolo Mariduena’s Blue Beetle and John Cena’s Peacemaker. However, DC has confirmed that The Batman movies take place within their own separate universe, so viewers should not expect to see Robert Pattinson showing up in Clayface or any other DCU projects.
Clayface is set to release in US theaters on October 23, 2026.
The trailers for Clayface have avoided showing how the movie will actually connect with the rest of the DCU. Supergirl was closely tied to story elements introduced in Superman, and Lanterns helped provide more context for Guy Gardner’s origin before joining the Justice Gang. Clayface appears to be mostly a standalone film by contrast, but it’s possible there could be some connective tissue with other projects. It could also establish some elements of Gotham City and Batman’s wider world, which might be picked up in future movies.
Will Batman Appear in the New DCU?
The current DCU has introduced several superheroes, including Superman, Hawkgirl, and multiple versions of Green Lantern. While Batman is arguably DC’s most recognizable character, the rebooted DCU has yet to showcase the hero. That will change in the future, as DC Studios has confirmed that Batman will appear in a film titled The Brave and the Bold. Little has been revealed about that movie, though Andy Muschietti is attached to direct. Since The Batman: Part II has faced numerous delays, it’s unclear how or when The Brave and the Bold will fit into Gunn’s DCU plans.
The Batman: Part II is set to release on February 18, 2028. While Matt Reeves began principal photography on the sequel, Deadline reports that Steven Soderbergh will be stepping in to help bring it across the finish line. Reeves’ departure is related to a family issue, though he will apparently work closely with Soderbergh to ensure that the superhero sequel follows his vision. Given everything happening behind the scenes, it’s unclear whether the director intends to return for a third film in the series, and what that might mean for The Brave and the Bold‘s development.
Batman fans might be getting impatient as they wait to see their favorite hero added to the DCU, but it could be for the best. The previous “Snyderverse” rushed its icons into a movie together, barely establishing its universe before releasing Batman vs. Superman. The rebooted DC Universe is taking its time by contrast, setting up heroes and villains who haven’t previously gotten much attention on the big screen. Clayface certainly fits that criteria, and the character’s solo movie should help the DC Universe continue to feel distinct from anything that came before.
