PlayStation reveals Midnight black PS5 launching on the same day as GTA 6

Sony is releasing a Midnight Black PS5 on the same day as GTA 6, but the $347 console will only be available in Japan.

The new Digital Edition swaps the PS5’s white exterior for a black finish, matching Sony’s existing Midnight Black accessories.

It costs ¥55,000 (approximately $347) and launches on November 19, 2026, giving PlayStation fans the chance to go all out with a fresh new look for the launch of GTA 6.

However, like the existing Japanese-language Digital Edition, the Midnight Black model supports only Japanese as its system language and requires a PlayStation account with its country or region set within the land of the rising sun.

Sony’s black PS5 arrives on GTA 6 release day

As announced via the Japanese PlayStation Blog on October 13, preorders for the console will begin at participating Japanese retailers and online stores on October 20.

Despite its new bold look, the Digital Edition Midnight Black PS5 has the same core features, including 3D audio, support for compatible PS4 games, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The console also comes with a Midnight Black controller and has an 825GB SSD for downloaded games, with Astro’s Playroom preinstalled and ready to go. However, those wanting to play physical copies of their favorite games will need to purchase a disc drive separately.

Alongside the new console variant, Sony will be launching a matching Midnight Black drive separately for an additional ¥11,980 (around $75.78), which brings the total to ¥66,980 (around $424).

The new Digital Edition Japan-exclusive PS5 console comes amidst the news that Sony will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts away from physical media in the company’s history.
