Pokemon card designed by a six-year-old just sold for $156,000

A Pokemon card designed by six-year-old Megu Taniguchi has sold for $156,000 at auction, turning a childhood drawing into one of the rarest and most valuable Zorua cards ever released.

The card is the 2010 Pokemon Illusion’s Zorua Design Contest Promo, specifically the Kindergarten Winner variant. It features Zorua and Pikachu riding together on a bus and was created to celebrate the theatrical release of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

The auction closed on September 27 through Fanatics Collect, with the card selling for $156,000. The copy was graded PSA 10 Gem Mint, making it one of the best-preserved examples available to collectors.

A six-year-old’s drawing became a Pokemon grail

Taniguchi won the kindergarten category of the Pokemon card design contest when she was six years old. Along with prize money, winners received a limited print run of cards featuring their artwork.

The Kindergarten Winner version is especially sought after because only a small number were produced. ComicBook.com reports that approximately 100 copies were printed, while the card’s unusual artwork and contest history have helped turn it into a major collector’s item.

The sale also highlights how much value Pokemon collectors place on cards that were never released through standard booster packs. Like the famous Pikachu Illustrator, the Zorua promo was awarded through a design contest, making it far harder to find than cards from a normal Pokemon TCG set.

The $156,000 result is a dramatic increase over the card’s earlier sales history. A PSA 10 copy reportedly sold for $8,700 in 2023, showing just how quickly demand for rare Pokemon promos has grown.

The sale adds another unusual entry to the world of high-end Pokemon collecting, where cards featuring childhood artwork, contest prizes, and tiny print runs can now sell for more than a house. Dexerto has previously covered some of the most expensive Pokemon cards ever sold, including the record-breaking Pikachu Illustrator.
