On October 7, 2026, popular X user @Awk20000 posted a clip from CNN’s article about Abdul El-Sayed. The article stated that the Democratic Senate nominee distanced himself from Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. The progressive commentator has a large following on the platform and has campaigned with the Michigander on previous occasions. However, Piker’s controversial statements have allowed El-Sayed’s Republican counterparts and detractors to weaponize them against him in the election.
CNN noted an instance where Piker said America is worse than Al-Qaeda in terms of terrorist activities. Speaking to an Axios reporter, the progressive commentator said the U.S. was “pound for pound” worse than the extremist militant group. When asked about it, he said:
“Yes. Pound for pound, as far as the number of deaths, yes. We have caused tremendous terror all around the world. I think that that is not only terror that we are waging on regular civilians and the nations in the periphery, but it’s also having consequences on ourselves. It’s having dramatic consequences on the home front.”
According to CNN, Abdul El-Sayed had called Piker and warned him that his rhetoric could cost him votes. He allegedly asked the Twitch streamer to stop making such comments. CNN also said it had reached out to Piker for comment but received no response.
Piker is known for making controversial remarks on his broadcasts. His statements are often clipped and condemned by Republican and conservative figures on social media. The article also notes a previous instance where the Twitch streamer made contentious comments about American Jews.
On August 20, 2026, Hasan Piker shared his thoughts on American Jews’ support for Israel. He said that their investment in Israel could lead to someone “taking action.” He also noted that this could fuel antisemitism and said, “How dangerous this predicament is.” During the stream, he had this to say:
“People don’t f*** with Israel any longer, and if Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone’s gonna come around and take action… I don’t know how people don’t recognize how dangerous this predicament is, how dangerous this is for Jews. You’re running around basically tying your entire identity to a country that inevitably will be seen as basically Jewish ISIS, and you’re saying, as Jews, this is all we care about. You’re making antisemitism worse.”
