Costco shoppers are adding small doors between their garages and pantries so they can unload bulk purchases without hauling everything through the house.
Buying in bulk can save money, but getting everything from the car to the kitchen is its own workout. Some Costco fans have decided that problem deserves a home renovation.
Known as ‘Costco doors,’ the openings let shoppers pass groceries straight from the garage into storage. Fewer trips, less carrying, and a dedicated entrance for the next oversized shopping haul.
With Costco cutting prices on popular Kirkland Signature products, shoppers have had more reasons to stock up. These homeowners are making sure their houses can keep up.
‘Costco doors’ give groceries a shortcut into the house
According to The Washington Post, builder Jay Roberts said around half his custom home customers request the feature after seeing one. He put the cost at roughly $1,000.
Utah homeowner Sasha Kudinova had one added last year.
“It’s such a simple feature, but it makes everyday life so much easier,” she told the publication.
In Ontario, Canada, Asmaa Hussain had a Costco door installed during a renovation after spotting the idea on social media. She lives with her husband, mother, mother-in-law and two children, and enjoys hosting groups of up to 50 friends and relatives.
“The Costco toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent,” she told The Washington Post, “it’s just easy to push it directly there.”
For shoppers picking up household staples, the appeal is straightforward. Costco’s water and toilet paper might have made headlines when they appeared as unexpected free samples, but full packs take considerably more effort to bring home.
Costco shoppers already have pricing tricks to help spot a bargain. For those willing to remodel, there’s a shortcut for getting those bargains indoors, too.
