Rockstar is giving GTA 6 players more freedom to complete missions, including alternate escape routes and police chases where you can ignore the suggested path.
GTA 6’s Netflix Extended Look showed Jason and Lucia fighting through buildings, pulling off robberies and fleeing police. However, those sequences don’t always have to play out exactly as Rockstar demonstrated.
Speaking to IGN, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson explained that the studio has deliberately looked for opportunities to let players find their own way through the action.
“With this game we have made a very conscious effort to open things up where possible, without compromising the quality of the experience,” he said.

Nelson pointed to the tower block sequence shown in the preview as one example, confirming that players have multiple routes out of the building.
Another mission sees Jason and Lucia pick up Raul before escaping police. It initially puts players on shooting duty as Jason while Lucia drives, before handing them control of the getaway.
“There is an optimal route that you’re told to get out, but if you don’t follow it, you can still get out,” Nelson explained.
The objective is still to escape, but players don’t have to follow Rockstar’s preferred route to do it. Nelson said the team wants missions involving wanted levels or robberies to behave consistently with those same systems in free roam.
That freedom comes with some limits. Elsewhere in the interview, he explained why certain story sequences still need direction: “To move the narrative forward in a believable way, you have to hit these beats.”
“It can sometimes be hard to keep the quality as high as you want if you allow for too much freedom or too much choice on missions, but we are really trying wherever we can,” he added.
The approach also extends to Jason and Lucia’s partnership, with players able to divide driving and shooting duties during police pursuits.
“The partner can drive pretty well, so you can often have the partner drive to get you away from the cops, and you, as the player, can be shooting behind.”
Nelson described unscripted escapes where shooting out a police car’s tires causes a crash that blocks pursuing vehicles, or a partner beats a train across the tracks to cut officers off.
Those interactions are part of an open world that still surprises Rockstar’s own developers. For Nelson, a successful getaway can feel like a carefully staged action sequence even when it happens naturally.
“It can feel like you’re playing a scripted mission, which is totally new for us.”
GTA 6 is set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
