Halo 3 mod quadruples multiplayer matches with 64-player battles

Halo 3’s multiplayer battles just got a lot more crowded, thanks to a free fan mod that quadruples its usual player limit.

Released in 2007, Bungie’s iconic first-person shooter follows Master Chief as he fights to stop the Covenant and the Flood. Alongside its campaign, Halo 3 features competitive multiplayer, with modes including Slayer and Capture the Flag.

Those multiplayer matches normally support up to 16 players, with Big Team Battle putting two teams of eight against each other.

Now, PC players can push that limit to 64 through Project Reclaimer, a fan-made standalone launcher that runs Halo 3 from Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Halo 3 fan project adds 64-player multiplayer and online split screen

Project Reclaimer is free to download from its website, which explains its features and how to get started. However, every player needs their own Steam copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, with Halo 3 installed, including its campaign.

Describing the project, its website explains: “It adds games for up to 64 players, four-player split-screen that plays online, Halo 3’s campaign in co-op for up to 16 players, dedicated servers, a server browser, playlists with lobby voting, scripted game modes, an expanded Forge with Halo 3’s AI and in-game moderation, and runs on your own copy of the game.”

That expanded player count allows two full teams of 32 to compete, or all 64 players to fight each other in a free-for-all. According to the project’s website, any game type can support that size, including Forge and scripted modes.

It also brings online split-screen to PC, allowing up to four people to share one screen. Each player gets their own view and HUD, using their own controller or keyboard and mouse. That group can host a match, join another server, including a dedicated server, or tackle the campaign together in co-op.

Project Reclaimer is currently available as an early development build, with its developers advising players to expect bugs.
