A French bulldog has died after defending her owners during a black bear attack, with the couple crediting her actions with helping save their lives.
Seven-year-old Cassie intervened when a bear attacked Jeff Wilson outside his Northern California home on September 19. His wife, Mallory, was also injured after rushing outside to help deal with the wild animal.
According to People, Cassie was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital but died on September 21. The couple believe their beloved pet helped them survive.

Mallory told KRON4 that Jeff had followed Cassie outside when the bear attacked.
“Cassie immediately came to his defense, putting herself between Jeff and the bear,” she said.
Mallory heard screaming and went outside, where she was attacked too. She said the encounter unfolded before they had time to understand what was happening.
“Cassie was never meant to be a guard dog. She was a beloved indoor lapdog, and we are heartbroken that she ever had to be in the position to fight for her life. We believe her actions helped save our lives,” Mallory explained.
“She was funny, stubborn, loving, incredibly brave, and completely devoted to us.”
GoFundMeMallory found her husband bleeding on the ground and Cassie in the bear’s mouth.
She struck the animal with patio furniture, but it knocked her down and grabbed the back of her head before fleeing.
Jeff suffered two broken ribs alongside bite and claw wounds. Mallory sustained serious head and face injuries. Friends launched a fundraiser to support the couple as they recover and mourn Cassie. At the time of writing, the GoFundMe has raised $25,000 of its $28,000 goal.
The GoFundMe states, “Cassie was a deeply loved member of their family, and in the moment Jeff needed her most, this little dog courageously put herself between him and a bear.”
Cassie joins other pets whose owners have credited them with lifesaving actions. Earlier this year, a kitten named Fred died after waking his sleeping owner during a house fire. In Tennessee, a dog named Joy was credited with alerting a family of five to a farmhouse blaze, but did not survive.
Other incidents have ended more happily, including a cat alerting its owner to a smoking RTX 4090 and a dog scaring a hawk out of a woman’s apartment.
