Best FC 27 Formations for FUT and Career Mode

Formation is equally important in both Ultimate Team and Career modes in FC 27. This is a long-term process that will greatly impact how your club grows. Every formation comes with a different set of positions. Some formations need fullbacks, who are also capable of being wingbacks, while some others require defensive midfielders.

Some formations need two center backs, but some need three, so it can be confusing to come up with a formation if you don’t know what you’re doing. Below, we’ll explain the best formations in FC 27 so you know exactly what to do.

Best Formations for Ultimate Team (FUT)

4-4-1-1 (2)

If you want your attack to slightly outweigh your defense without much sacrifice, this is the most balanced option. 4-4-1-1 has been one of the most popular formations in the series for a long time. This formation gives you a great advantage when pushing forward. Aside from your striker, the midfielders will also join the attack, creating different passing options to confuse your opponent and run behind their defensive line easily.

You have three midfielders in the center of the pitch, which allows you to create space for your striker. The best part is that you also have dedicated wide midfielders who can also serve as wingers, who will join the attack and make runs on the wide sides of the pitch.

If you are not into dribbling and lean more towards a passing game, you will find no better option than 4-4-1-1 without sacrificing your defensive structure.

You have two midfielders to control the center, and they provide good coverage before the ball enters the center-back territory. 4-4-1-1 might not be the ideal formation to stop the counter-attacks.

That number advantage we talked about earlier has a consequence that shows itself in the counter-attacks. It’s not like you will be totally defenseless, but the opponent can easily bypass your midfield line. Also, if the opponent is a good dribbler, you may have issues controlling the center of the pitch in the midfield area.

4-3-1-2

If you value defense more than offense, then this will suit your team better. 4-3-1-2 gives you a much sturdier midfield area that is really difficult to pass through. This formation has no sideline control. You can use your fullbacks as wingbacks, but it won’t feel as good as having wingers. And honestly, you don’t need to.

To succeed with 4-3-1-2, you need to master your through-passing abilities. This formation is all about sending through balls to your attackers. So, you need fast strikers who can run with the ball at a high speed as soon as they receive a through pass. To yield even better results, learn and master precision passing. Using triggered runs will also help you a lot with timing your through passes.

Defense is where 4-3-1-2 shines the most. I had most of my clean sheets with this formation in both Division Rivals and Squad Battles. This formation gives you immense control over the midfield area, letting you lock it down by preventing the opponent from making space to pass the ball through.

The three midfielders are more eager to defend than attack. On the attacking side, you will have to rely most on your two strikers to work together.

4-2-4

This formation gives you the least midfield control, but the best attack support. You will have 4 players ready to run behind the defensive line and create chances. It’s just amazing how many passing options you have while doing a quick counter-attack, but for this to work, you need top-notch strikers.

Wingers are crucial in this formation, and they need to be fast, as they make pretty good runs both towards the penalty area and on the sidelines. Pace is the most important factor, because you need to get into a 1v1 situation with the goalkeeper, and that makes scoring pretty easy.

The good thing about this formation is that it gives you plenty of attack options. You can play tiki-taka, you can use crosses and headers, you can rely on through balls, you can cut back inside with your wingers, and you can even dribble everyone. This formation gives you the key to ultimate attacking football.

4-2-4 gives you limited control in the midfield area, and the opponent can easily bypass it. Although your two midfielders will participate in defending, they can’t cover it as strongly as in a 4-3-1-2, which is actually a killer of the 4-2-4. The amount of concentration that 4-3-1-2 has in the center of the pitch can be quite annoying to any player who uses a 4-2-4 formation against it.

Conceding goals in this formation is not surprising, but you can compensate for it by scoring more. However, this scoring trade-off is why I don’t recommend this formation for higher levels, but it works well for Squad Battles.

Best Formations in Career Mode

The following formations are only useful in the Authentic gameplay. If you are playing Career Mode with the competitive gameplay, you should be using the formations recommended for the Ultimate Team mode.

Take a look at our slider settings guide for the Authentic gameplay, as the raw form of Authentic is not ideal at all.

4-5-1 Attack

4-5-1 gives you a significantly active attacking force, especially on the sidelines, but at the cost of control over the midfield area. This is the best formation for teams with fast wingers, as they can easily cut back inside and score with short passes into the penalty area.

The two attacking midfielders will not contribute much to the defense. In fact, all the defensive duties in the midfield area are focused on the single central midfielder, which makes your midfield belt pretty vulnerable. The opposing team will be able to easily transfer balls from their defense to their attack due to this vulnerability. So, you will feel a lot of pressure on your defenders, which will drain their stamina bar faster as well.

It’s very important to get two fast wingers, as well as fast center-backs. You need good bench options for the center-back position as well. You can’t just use your main center-backs every game, as they won’t regain their full strength with how compact the schedules are, especially for the teams that are also competing in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League.

3-4-1-2

If you are not willing to make the sacrifices in the midfield area like the 4-5-1 formation, then you can switch to 3-4-1-2. This one is not as good as 4-5-1 in attacking scenarios, but it still works well. Having two strikers gives you a stronger presence inside the opponent’s penalty area, especially if you want to use crosses or through balls.

The good news is that you still have two sideline midfielders that can work as your wingers, but only one attacking midfielder to join the attack. So, you won’t have the same number advantage as with 4-5-1 in your attacking scenarios. As a trade-off, you get two central midfielders that give you more control over the middle of the pitch, making it harder for opponents to transition quickly from defense to attack.

By changing the roles, you can give these central midfielders more defensive duties, but it’s up to you. The only downside of the 3-4-1-2 formation is that the defensive line is vulnerable to sideline runs and crosses. Unless you give your left and right midfielders defensive roles, you won’t have much presence on your side of the sidelines, and that makes it difficult to defend against teams that have quick wingers.
