What Hunts the Night is a quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker where Coen faces off against an abomination created by Brencis to hunt down the Manumits. After investigating the missing scouts in Where Loyalty Lies, Coen has to bring back the clues he has discovered from the now-dead scout to Crake, the leader of the rebels.
After learning about the clue “Teotim,” Crake immediately understands that the scout was pointing towards St. Teotim’s, a church found in the Middens area of Svartrau City. However, before heading there, Crake has one burning question: was Layos responsible for the scouts’ deaths?
Was Layos Responsible in What Hunts the Night?
After learning about what happened to the scouts, Crake will ask Coen whether Layos was responsible for what happened. The clue about Layos’s guilt can be found in the form of a letter named “Orders: Middens,” which you can loot off one of the soldiers who attack you in the courtyard at the end of the Where Loyalty Lies quest.
If you have the letter when reporting back to Crake, you have two options when he asks you about Layos’s responsibility:
- Layos was an unwitting informant.
- I… I think he’s innocent.
Regardless of which option you choose, Crake will kill Layos. If you say he is an informant, Crake will justify this by saying that he’s a huge liability who needs to be put down to protect the others. If you say he is innocent, Crake will say that the absence of proof does not prove innocence, and for the safety of the entire rebellion, he needs to be put down.
You can have Coen argue with Crake, but the outcome will be the same no matter which dialogue option you choose.
In the Orders: Middens letter, it is revealed that Layos was an unwitting pawn who played into Brencis’s hands, leading soldiers to the rebels’ hideout because he was being shadowed by enemy forces. Layos believed that he had infiltrated Brencis’s forces, but he was actually only helping the enemy by leading them directly to the Manumits hideouts.
What Hunts the Night Walkthrough in Blood of Dawnwalker
Investigate St. Teotim’s Churchyard
After reporting to Crake, he will invite you to investigate St. Teotim’s Church in the Middens with him and Sara. Once you’re there, inspect the blood splatters on the ground and the broken wing in the middle of the courtyard to discover some clues. Follow the blood trail to the main door of the church and inspect the bloodstains underneath the doorframe.
When you do this, an “open the door” prompt will appear on the tower door. Interacting with it will trigger a cutscene where Sara and Coen will attempt to open the door, only to be thrown yards away by a monstrous bat-like creature bursting through the door. The creature will throw Sara across the courtyard with its bladed arm one more time before Coen manages to get his bearings and start the boss fight against the Beast of St. Teotim’s.
Inspect the Monster’s Remains
After you defeat the monster, Crake will ask you to investigate the monster’s dead body to discover what makes it tick, assuring Coen that he’ll take care of the injured Sara in the meantime. Investigate the remains in the middle of the courtyard according to his instructions.
When you finish, another cutscene will play out where Crake and Coen find out that Sara’s body is unresponsive. Crake will send Coen away, ostensibly to barricade the door, and when he’s gone, he’ll plunge a knife through Sara’s chest, killing her instantly.
Help Crake Escape the Ambush
Immediately after Sara’s death, Crake and Coen will have to run away while being chased by soldiers. There is a linear path you can follow during this chase sequence where you’ll be attacked three times by small groups of soldiers. Defeat the groups of soldiers as they come until you eventually reach a dead end next to a locked door.
Use Coen’s Shadowstep ability to climb the wall next to the locked door and planeshift to the other side, before dropping down on the other side. Defeat the soldiers here as well, and then open the door for Crake to trigger a final escape cutscene where you and Crake outrun Brencis’s soldiers to hide out in a small, rundown shack in the middens.
Here, you can ask Crake multiple questions about what happened, why he killed Sara, and what your next move should be. There are no consequences tied to these dialogue choices, so roleplay freely.
Can You Save Sara in What Hunts the Night?
No, you cannot. Sara’s death in The Blood of Dawnwalker is a scripted event. There are no choices Coen can make to prevent her from getting injured at the hands of the Beast of Teotim’s or getting mercy-killed by Crake afterward.
Lore-wise, Coen’s blood should be able to heal Sara, as vrakhiri blood has been shown to have extreme healing properties. The entire premise of the game is that Brencis is using the carrot-and-stick approach to rule, with the carrot being the ability to heal anybody using vrakhiri blood.
However, this is not provided as an option to save Sara during this quest. This could be a plot hole, or it could be because Dawnwalker blood doesn’t have the same healing properties as vrakhiri blood, though that hasn’t been established by lore as far as we know. Regardless, the fact remains that the option to have Sara drink your blood isn’t given at all, so you’ll have to stick with the consequences.
