AI Researcher Quits Anthropic, Says Anthropic and OpenAI Are “Gambling With Our Lives” While Not Acting Responsibly

Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher, quit Anthropic and accused OpenAI and Anthropic of gambling with people’s lives in a post on X. Coxon’s September 8, 2026, post went viral, in which he called out the AI companies for acting irresponsibly. He says he is leaving the AI industry because of this, writing:

“I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

Under the same post, Jacob Coxon raised further concerns about AI posing real-life dangers to humans. He claimed that even tech executives at the company believe artificial intelligence can lead to human extinction by 2030.

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible. But I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”

Coxon claims AI executives at Anthropic know about the risk, but are still determined to beat other companies like OpenAI to the technological breakthrough.

“At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first. They believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.”

Jacob Coxon is not alone in saying that AI could pose dangers to human lives. Anthropic’s Science Lead Evan Hubinger agreed with Coxon in a reply to the X post. The Anthropic veteran has been with the company since 2023. Hubinger went as far as to state that there is more than a 10% chance that a superintelligent artificial intelligence will eradicate humanity.

Evan Hubinger claimed that Anthropic is trying but does not have a proper plan to tackle the problem:

“Jacob is correct here. We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.”

Hubinger’s comments underscore the importance of AI regulation and responsibility. Unlike outside critics, both Hubinger and Coxon are veterans in the field, having worked at both Anthropic and OpenAI for years. It seems that the most serious warnings about AI risk aren’t coming from outside critics, but from Anthropic’s own researchers.
